Johnny Depp celebrated at Purbeck Film Festival
BBC News ~ Tuesday, 12 October 2010

QUOTE
The movie roles of actor Johnny Depp will be celebrated at the Purbeck Film Festival from 15 - 30 October 2010, but the actor has not been invited.

The event, now in its fourteenth year, has previously championed silver screen legends Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo.

In addition to films starring Mr Depp, over 80 movies will be screened in 30 different venues in the area of Purbeck during the two week event.

A spokesperson said it would be "a privilege" if Mr Depp were to attend.

"I don't think he knows about it unless he's Googled it," said administrator Julie Sharman. "But you never know. We'd be very privileged if he were to arrive to introduce one of his films."

The actor paid a surprise visit to a school in south London on 9 October after a pupil wrote to Captain Jack Sparrow, the character he plays in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

First festival

The first Purbeck Film Festival took place in 1996 as a celebration by locals of the centenary of cinema in the UK.

It is now run by a group called the Purbeck Film Charitable Trust, which bought Wareham independent cinema The Rex in April 2009.

"It's a community festival, our two aims are to bring the community together to celebrate film and bring film to rural areas," said Ms Sharman.

"Local support is overwhelming," she said, adding that increasingly film enthusiasts were coming to the region from other areas to support the event.

Other festival highlights include Silent Night, a night of silent movies at The Rex, a Bollywood evening and a short film competition.
