I think that Spandau is essentially the same as in the first book-Depp shows a bit more of Spandau's emotional turmoils when mentioning that his ex-wife is engaged and I think that is why he and Anna start a semi-relationship. I feel like Depp put most of his creative energy into developing Perec and Anna as the forces that led Spandau on his journery to Cannes. Anne r

I totally agree with you Anne! Depp seemed to focus more on Perec and Anna but did let us see that Spandau was dealing with the same issues, his wife etc., as in the first book. I do think that the part where he got a little too aggressive with his wife might have been the start of a turning point for him though.
All in all, I still love Spandau! If any of you watch NCIS, he reminds me of Mark Harmons character Gibbs. Says volumes with just a look, bitter and a man of a few words and you know if you're with him nothing bad is going to happen to you.

Y'all have really brought up some good thoughts about Depp's writing of Spandau this time around. I wonder what Depp has planned for Spandau next? Thanks y'all for such good observations!

I agree as well. Though Depp kept the Spandau character true to his original personality, he did seem to expand him a bit more but it seemed to me the focus of Babylon Nights was Perec, Anna and Special - and Cannes and LaLa Land. Spandau seemed to just be pushed along for the ride. and that spoke volumes about the character's disposition at this point.

Well said, Amp!! You have to wonder what he'll do with Spandau next? OR will he?
