I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I have never seen a movie with subtitles. Do they dub the voice so we hear someone else speaking the lines in English, or do we hear Johnny in Spanish and then read the English at the bottom of the screen?
Debbie
Usually you hear the actor speaking in the language in which it was filmed and therefore there are subtitles in your local language that the audience has to read, which is always a shortened description of what the "gist" of the dialogue was was. NOT VERY REWARDING at all!
I am NOT looking forward to an abbrieviated transcribed English text of the "gist" of what Johnny's character will be saying. And as fulfilling a challenge as that might be for the actor, to "act" in the native language of the character? It is not a rewarding trade off for non Spanish speaking audience. JMHO So no. I am NOT finding this an exciting project. As I've said before, as his fans we will either see a movie, or not. A Depp film in Spanish for me, is a NOT see. But I do wish him well in stepping out of his comfort zone.
Totally agree with you; especially since he doesn't speak spanish. And I find that with subtitles I miss half the movie since I am spending most of my time trying to read the subtitle instead of watching the movie.

Thanks for answering my questions about dubbing. I would like to hear Johnny speaking Spanish and I would much rather hear him speaking (even if I don't understand what he's saying) than having someone else speaking the lines in English. But, yeah, I'm afraid that I won't be able to watch the actors as closely as I like to because I'll be spending so much time reading the subtitles. If this actually does happen, I suspect I will see it but it won't be the same as a regular Johnny movie.

Again, if it gets dubbed, most likely it will be Johnny doing his own dubbing, not some other actor.
But I'm also willing to bet there will never be dubbing, and the likelihood of anyone besides fans of Johnny or arthouse films who have access to them will even be interested in seeing something like this, and this notion supports my idea that it will not be dubbed in English or any other language.
