Johnny's love, friendship and respect for Hunter aside, what do you think JD finds interesting about Paul Kemp? What do you think his motivation might be in the character?

Where is everybody!?!?!?!? I ended up working a whole lot longer day than I planned on. The question for today.. what does Johnny find interesting about the Paul Kemp's character?? Well.. first I'm thinking he probably likes the idea of the life of the journalist. Able to go somewhere .. anywhere and make some sort of a living writing stories.. tidbits for papers of whatever is going on around him. His insight on it.. his point of view or take on the situations. Here this guy Paul.. takes off for San Juan.. tropical place.. one would think maybe like paradise.. not responsible for anybody but himself .. so why not have a good time.. unfortunately alot of that ended up in him getting himself in trouble. But again.. he's only responsibile for himself... so why not have a good time and see where it leads. Maybe it was the not knowing of what to expect.

I imagine that Johnny would tackle Kemp for several reasons. One, of course, is that he was very close to Hunter, and he would be able to bring those intimate nuances to the characterization. Another reason, at least for me, is that there is a seedy side to Kemp, and I can see Johnny relishing the chance to protray that and yet make us sympathetic to him. Kemp does try to do the "right" thing, but he is still watching out for himself at all times. A third reason may be that he feels a kindred connection to Kemp. As Kemp says in the prologue, "Like most of the others, I was a seeker, a mover, a malcontent, and at times a stupid hell-raiser. ...I felt somehow that my instincts were right." Kemp is, in his own way, a man of strong conviction.
