I think he wanted to tell us that we are all searching for the 'other side' of the hill, no matter what type of life we live in. And also that , despite living the 'american dream' we're always wanting something more, different, or to seek someplace better than the place we are in.

Perhaps he was saying that basically life scares us. We want to succeed but we're afraid of success. We may have motivation but the unknown (or fear of the unknown) holds us back. Maybe we're our own worst enemies. Does the world set us up to fail or do we set ourselves up to fail? Who is responsible for our destiny? Does it matter if we strive to make a difference or are we all players in a game of pre-planned fate in which we have no say? Why work hard to direct your life if it's already planned out? Almost like taking a defeatist attitude before you even begin.
