LT Discussion point #11 A tribute to his genius

Daniel Depp's author's note at the very beginning of the book covers all of the bases when he writes:

Let's discuss this and any resemblance to anything you noticed. You know you did, so let's pay tribute to the author's genius.

I am wondering if anyone else saw any resemblance between "Legends of the Fall" and oh say "Wildfire"?

Daniel is a "genius", but I am at a loss at how to pay tribute. Lotta help I am.

Gee, this a tough question to answer.
I think Daniel thinks we all have someone real pictured in our minds for each character. Wrote them well enough so we could say, 'well Jurado has got to be or Locatelli has to be' and so on. It's fun trying to guess who they are and maybe that's what Daniel meant but I don't know that I'm answering your question Karen.

Rose Sparrow that is EXACTLY what I was thinking about!! Who or what did we "*think" something or someone might be or reminded us of. There's no right or wrong thought...but I am sure that when we read descriptions of things, places or people, that we may have had someone or some place in mind that it reminded us of... or what or who we imagined it to be. When he was talking about Wildfire, the only thing that popped into my mind was, gee that reminds me of Legends of the Fall. Doesn't mean that it was, just that it reminded me of it.

I honestly don't think Daniel tried to use any specific person as a template for a character, but for sure there was lots of inspiration.

I can't help but think Johnny was part of the inspriration for Bobby--there are just too many coincicdences in my opinion. Also, I thought Terry was a James Bond type in many ways----great in bed, deadly, etc, etc. I can see Spandau as the John Wayne/Robert Mitchum type as well(didn't he say in an interview that Mitchum was part of the inspiration for Spandau?)

I never saw Legends of the Fall, so I can't comment on that one.

I can't comment on Legends of the Fall either because I didn't see it as well.

I agree that there are many, so I'll add Lee's references to Terry during their fight. Lee says dwarfs and Terry corrects him by saying 'd w a r v e s', pronouncing each letter like Warren Beatyy did in Bugsy.

Also when the reporter talking to Spandau about Richie, she called him Teflon because nothing sticks on him. Exact reference to John Gotti, who was called the Teflon don.
