I was actually surprised at first (naive?) but it made perfect sense, and it made the book juicy and gave it that edge of always having to look over your shoulder to see what's lurking.
You do not mess with Locatelli--there's that honor thing that Stella seemed to lack.

I agree with Arnelle. Having organized crime involved added to the suspense. Makes you kind of wonder though just how much they really are involved in financing or whatever, in the movie industry.

I wasn't surprised about mafia involvement with the industry---I think it goes back to the Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin mafia involvement which The Godfather touched on all those years ago. Plus, look at the drug business, Vegas and I believe horse racing---they're out there and powerful, just more sophistated......IMO

The mob involvement to me was the "cement" that held the story together-like Karen said where there is money one will find the mob and which makes me ponder the relationship between the mob and the different levels of government-not a point of discussion here but it still entere my mind. Anne r

Actually the mob controlled a great deal of the city government and police force of Los Angeles in the '50s and '60s.
