I think the technology of the Glass Books was a little unbelievable, but Dahlquist did a good job of providing some basis for the technology. It reminds me of Orwell's 1984. Who would have thought in 1949 when the book was published, that the type of technological advances Orwell wrote about would actually be seen in society?
I think that's why this book is hard to pin down to a specific genre. It really is a combination of historical/fantasy/horror/science fiction genres.

I have a question:
Is the generation 'gap' in the book a difficult concept for you? (Old Europe vs. Technological Glass Books).
It wasn't for me, it was one of the aspects of the story that I really enjoyed. I love steam punk and I think that's why it worked for me on some level.

Oh, I see. George Orwell's 1984, or Space Oddessy... a good comparison, that makes it easier to grasp. Thanks.
Karen, What is 'steam punk' I don't understand that term at all. The author certainly doens't Look Punk to me! LOL... and I'm sure that's not what the term means !

Here's a thread that talks about Steampunk. It's a genre of fiction/fantasy that also includes authors like HG Wells and others. The old TV show "Wild Wild West" could be catagorized as "steam punk". Personally, I think this book fits the "genre"...it's pretty fun! http://johnnydeppreads.com/index.php?showtopic=6918
