He finished this in August of 1996 and he died a few days after it's publication on March 9, 1997.

How do you feel about that? Do you think he waited until he knew his story had been safely told? Or is it just they way one season ends and another begins? OR something else?

I believe that Baudy has come to an acceptance of what his circumstances are.. what the future really is for him. He mentions the progress he has made with his speech.. it isnt much .. but it still IS something. He knows that the world as he knew it is out there.. but his world.. his life is now inside the walls of Berck. He will still hear the tales of his friends that do still come to visit him.. of their comings & goings.

What amazed me was that this book was written/blinked in the time span of 2 months. That just seems incredible to me. The determination that Baudy had to get his story out there.

No, I dont think he was waiting till his book was pubished to pass on over. I see him as a strong and determined man to make as much of his life as he could now. He mentions and sounds happy with just the fact that Theo had shoes now that would flash in the dark.

I love the term he uses.. "my minds scrapbook" in describing his & Claudes reminders of a summer of hard work.

I don't think he waited for that. I think he has come to terms with his position in live and the limitations he has. The title says it, and he also says:

"I have indeed begun a new life, and that live is here, in this bed. that wheelchair and those corridors. Nowhere else."

One other thing is that he set up "The Association du Locked-In Syndrome (ALIS)" wich searches for a possible cure of LIS. He may think they will find a cure for it in the future or maybe even somewhere else for that matter.

"Does the cosmos contain keys for opening up my cocoon?"

And

"We must keep looking."

This was his "new life", and I believe he accepted that. I don't think he just let go after the publication. But I do think, maybe for the first time in his life, he realized his own mortality. Something many of us don't do until something truly frightening like this happens. In his mind he was conscious of the fact that it happened once -- it could happen again, and he wanted to make sure his story was told in case it did. I'll even go as far as saying he might have felt he didn't have a lot of time left, so he wanted his story told.

The fact he didn't die until after the publication, I think, is one of those blessings we sometimes get in life.

"My Minds Scrapbook"

I dont know how the man kept it all straight in his head. The things he wanted to say. The memories of his children. This was the only resource this man had. He must have had one heck of a large filing system up there tucked away.

I think back to being in school and having to write a paper. You were taught to make an outline.. to put your thoughts in order down on paper and then to expand under each what it was you wanted to get across. And he had to do this all in his head.

He stated that when Claude read back the pages to him.. that some he was pleased to see again .. others were disappointing. I wonder disappointing in what way? Was it that he felt he didnt get across correctly the way he wanted something.. or was it a disappoint of having to relive some of it again.. the more unpleasant times.

Could be - knowing that his story was published and that the goal he had set out to do had been accomplished. When I read the last chapter though - I felt that he just wasn't giving up. He realized yes, that this was the state he was in, had been in for the past 10 months or so, and if he was to remain in this state the rest of his life - what other ways could there be for him to get his locked in thoughts out. His last statement - Does the cosmos contain keys for opening up my diving bell? A subway line with no terminus? A currency strong enough to buy my freedom back? We must keep looking.

To me that says he wasn't ready to give up and that in his mind he perhaps thought that if he continued to fight against his locked in syndrome, that maybe, just maybe he might just be able to do more one day. He certainly proved to us readers that he was a fighter. Having dictated this book was just the first step for him. What an accomplishment. I do so wish there was more that could have been done for him. And I think that if he had lived, he would have accomplished more.
