Why do you think the author included Isabelle and Etienne? What did the do to help move the story along? What did they bring to the story?

#2: If there was no Isabelle, no key. If didn't put those two charachters in, Hugo woudl ahve the key , and if Etienne wasn't there, hugowouldnt learn about all the film making and stuff. If no Isabelle, there wouldn't be Georges Millies.

#1: I think Etienne and Isabelle are in the story because it's mainly about the movies, and Etienne was a movie worker who got fired. Isabelle, sometimes sneaks in moves because she likes reading about them.

#3: Well, they need someone to have a connection between Georges movies and Hugo. I"m suprised abotu having Etienne there to make the final connection. Isabelle might have been able to do it all herself if she were a bit older. SHe could have snuck Hugo into the library, and stuff like that.

First of all, it was amazing how not only Isabelle and Etienne were some how all a piece of this puzzle, but everyone!
To me, it seemed that Hugo had no real contact or friendship with anyone so someone around his age and an intelligent and a kind adult were needed in the story so that Hugo could develop a connection with real people again.

Great observations, I'm glad that you shared your thoughts with us!! Isn't it amazing how the author plotted all of this out, figuring how to be able to make situations happen!?

WOW! MORE great observations about another of the plotlines! Movies!! Did you like the way he managed to get the movie part of the story in there by bringing in Etienne? And what about the way Etienne lost his eye to a rocket type of firecracker! Just like the "man in the moon" movie!

Good work you guys! woohoocheer.gif

They did need that connection and they needed an adult I think, because as you point out, Isabelle is too young.

I wondered about that too Rose, Hugo's basic lack of friends his own age once he couldn't go to school anymore and Etienne, even as a younger adult, filled that need.
