Billie met Spark in 1932 and found him attractive; they came from similiar backgrounds having lost their fathers at young age and both had ran away from home at a young age-I think they became a couple because no other opportunities were evident in their lives. Billie and Spark were arrested after robbing the post office in Chicago, Spark received a 15 year sentence and the charges against Billie were dropped. I feel that Spark asked Billie to marry him to gain access to her pension and I feel that she agreed because she would receive "home relief" a type of welfare as the indigent wife of Spark, a federal prisoner. Again the theme of a "survivor" pops into my mind-Billie had nothing else to depend upon at the time so the arrangement with Spark provided her with some income and most importantly someone to love. I got the feeling that she was searching for someone or some thing. Maybe love, maybe acceptance? Maybe she just wanted to fit in or belong somewhere, be with someone?

Karen I agree with you about wanting someone-her baby was dead and she was not close to her family so why not Spark-he sounds exciting- probably crazy according to a battery of prison tests and good looking from the description in the Molls book and with him behind bars she could still step out for some entertainment and not have to cook, do his laundry and wait on him- perfect relationship in my book. Karen, I too agree with you about why she married Sparks. The marriage evidently was one of convenience. She was Native American and Sparks knew of her birthright, she in return would have someone she could call her husband. Socially acceptable? There was also a marrying benefit for her. She was guaranteed what today would be called welfare.
Also, in Sparks she saw a loneliness she could understand. Why did she turn over her Indian Headright? Could it have been a tradeoff for what the marrying allottment she rec'd or possibly to pay his legal bills?
(off topic ~ sorry I'm a little slow in responding, I'm still trying to finish up the book, but I'm getting there )

If there's any message to my work, it is ultimately that it's OK to be different, that it's good to be different, that we should question ourselves before we pass judgment on someone who looks different, behaves different, talks different, is a different color. JD

I swear I typed out a long reply, left to pick Evan up from school and came back and it was gone... And I can't remember a darn thing I wrote. The gist of it was Sparks was good enough at the time. He was in a way controlling her from prison, controlling her money...nothing was truly hers, not her baby, not her money and certainly not her men...a husband in jail and another wanted by the law. And I think Billie so desperatley wanted something of her own. Remember how Dillinger chased her dog around the car showromm for her?
