And how do you think that would have affected Johnny's portrayal of Dean? Have fun!

I would have liked to see a bit more in the movie about Corso's relationship to women and his vulnerability. The scene with Liana Taillefer (Lena Olin) was definitely not a love scene, but one of manipulation on her part that didn't work. Was he even capable of love? We never really see into Dean's soul. Johnny has such a way of letting the audience know what he is feeling with his eyes, and I think they missed out by not allowing him to use that talent in this movie. He tries, boy he tries, but there is not much emotionally for him to work with other than fear, control, and surprise. They also could have let him be a bit more humerous. A sense of humor does not mean you cannot be manipulative, it just means you can enjoy the hoops you put people through, and Johnny does subtle humor so well.

I'd really like to know what was going thru Polanski's head about Dean Corso?...........why did he want to keep him so cold and yet cast an actor that is known for his sensitivity to "outcasts" and "outsiders!"

I definitely agree with this. There was a good amount of dry humor in the book (of course, a lot of it dealt with literary references and kept going over my head, much as I tried to remember Perez-Reverte's reminders!) I only finally finished the book this morning (bad girl, I know!) and haven't gotten a chance to watch the movie again yet. I seem to remember a few moments where Johnny displayed some wit, but overall the movie seemed a bit long and dry- more humor would've helped move the pace along. As far as Polanski being power-hungry, wasn't there a quote from Johnny himself somewhere where he referred to him as a "dictator"? I seem to remember this...
