Chris, Miss Frost and Mary. The other three women in the Ginger Man's world. What are their strong points? Their weak points? How did they affect Dangerfield? And how did he affect them?

chris seemed to be taking him at face-value, surely for the companionship, and was very disappointed when he made up drunken lies. i think i lost the thread when he went back and visited her - i wasn't sure if she wanted to see him or not. i couldn't draw a bead on her.

poor miss frost - i hate to use cliches but he was portraying her as a bit of an "old maid" and he made sure he took advantage of that vulnerable loneliness. and he made fun of her distress and fears of committing a sin. the way she talked w/him was so very stifled - making me believe she had been alone for a long time and was used to speaking in formal, shopgirl tones.....i felt sorry for her.

mary was a wild child who just needed the push to get away from that abusive father. drunks do not always make the best lovers (i'm specifically speaking of the physical) and, to her disappointment, she learned that w/sebastian. but she so desperately wanted to be loved and protected...and i think she hoped sebastian could do that....but she was coming to the realization that he couldn't so she was opening up her options.

This is such a good answer.

I'm sure these three women had no effect whatsoever on Dangerfield. he didn't spend enough time with any of them and his psyche was not in a position to want or need to change. But oh how he had an effect on the women. Dangerfield was an essential element in the Women's Life Lessons 101: How to Spot and Avoid a Loser.

I agree with the different character descriptions of each of these women, but a slightly different theory as to the effect they have on SD. With Mary, he initially sees her, I believe, as an exotic adventure. He is taken by her dark hair and eyes and muses most about her physical being. He imagines her as a creature of promise and excitement. Miss Frost however is more matronly and staid, earthy. He pities the poor nameless girl that he has a brief dalliance with and finally, Mary. With Mary, he is most interested in how her father treats her and how she survives his brutality.

Does he have ANY regard for these, or any, women? I believe that in his clumsy, irresponsible way that he wants to be a good man toward women. It just doesn't bare fruit that easily, 'specially when he still expects to have his cake and eat it and not willing to face the fallout. All the women have traits that make him have to face his own transgressions of life/manhood against them...the abused, the timid, the lonely, the flight of fancy.....
