It seemed they each thought the other would have access to wealth and comfort, and when that didn't happen, they became disenchanted.
My assumption is that Marion fell in love with the charming and seductive Sebastian, before she knew the scoundrel/miscreant underneath.
Poor Marion--she thought it was safe to breed with such a creature.
I don't think she caused anything to happen to him--except to say that she brought out his true colors with her traditional expections of a husband/father/provider, and didn't recognise his drinking problem as a problem, until it was too late.
No woman in her right mind could or would stay with a man like that. And he was relieved to be rid of her and their daughter! He rarely thought about them and didn't seem to be remorseful about their departure. Instead, he was infuriated by her tell-all to his father.
This could have been a fatal attraction--Marion had the good sense to bail out. Raising a baby in squalor when there is an alternative would not be the responsible choice.

Do you think she was deliberately trying to get him cut off from his parents' money, as a way of punishing him for his trangressions against her and Felicity?

She no doubt felt that he had little or no intention to provide any stability for her and their daughter, frittering away any money they had coming in on booze and, she probably suspects, other women. Strong chance also that her parents would only help support her if she got clean away from him anyway.
Interestingly in Chapter 4, SD muses about how, if he were Mr Big Bucks, his feelings toward family life would be a little more optomistic. How he imagines himself with a couple of meticulously planned children, not one that was born out of lust for the moment...which I think is how he refers to Felicity. Maybe a case of 'act in haste, repent at leisure!' Is this one of the reasons why he resents Marion so much?

really good observations.........and i agree w/you karen - marion had a lot of power. which sebastian seemed to ignore until it was too late. he was initially angry that she contacted his father and said something about "do you know what you've done?" but, once he learned his father died he clearly did not believe he would be cut off.
i suspect she went back to her own family. i agree that they would help her only if she dumped him - and who would blame her parents for feeling that way?
marion tolerated a lot and finally wised up and protected herself and felicity. it didn't seem to phase him a bit, did it? it is soooo hard to find something likeable in sebastian - especially when viewed as a woman, wife, and mother.

I wonder how much Marion suspected that he perhaps proposed to get her dowry and whether she felt he resented her when her father reneged the night before the wedding.

Well it appears that Marion (or someone) had some sort of influence because as we know from the ending that SD did NOT get his interitance on his father's passing. He had to wait 20 years.
