It was eight years ago today, that I posted the very first discussion question about the Stephen Jeffreys play, “The Libertine.” It wasn’t posted on a big forum like we are on today, it was posted on a Yahoo group with a handful of people joining in. That discussion exists today on this board. Here: http://www.johnnydeppreads.com/index.php?showforum=72 Each post was carefully copied, the chatter removed, and the discussion itself pasted into the new forum. This was a lot of work, a lot! All of it was done by two wonderful women, “JP” and Anne (Jeppody).
We quickly grew and grew. We’d out grown that Yahoo group and found a new home. After a couple of years, we’d outgrown that forum provider too. Then a wonderful woman named Wendy, who ran an Orlando Bloom fan site, suggested I try this forum provider and here we are still today. Eight years after we first started reading and chatting.
With us on that first Yahoo board, was another great woman, who is still around today, she’s not a mod here, but she’s been a loyal Depp follower and a staunch supporter of ours since before “day one” - Ellen! Ellen pops in when she can, and I see she’s around in the Dark Shadows discussion. Thanks Ellen for still being here.
Since we’ve had so many moves and everything we had was copied and pasted, we lost one discussion.. It was our first discussion of “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. And I hit the delete button by mistake. SHeesh! LOL
Another couple of people that I want to thank, who were around since the beginning are people you’ve never seen post on JDR, they are the anonymous people in LA, industry people, who have shared so many bits of news and exclusives over the years. Many people have questioned where my info comes from and it comes from people I don’t know, have never met, and wouldn’t know if they walked into my office right now. BUT I know that anything they ever shared with us has been 100% accurate. Many other “sources” have come and gone over the years, but there were some there at the beginning. They gave us so much!
We are truly blessed that over the years many, many studio and press people have reached out to us here on JDR and offered news, photos, updates, promotional items for give-aways, etc. I’ve worked with the wonderful people at Disney, Universal, Warners etc. We were able to include several people from JDR in a closed screening of “Sweeney Todd” a few years ago and have been quoted and referenced in Variety, Vanity Fair and many other publications and sites.
I’m sharing this with you all because many of you reading this are new, but many have been around for a long time. I am writing this to say “thank you.” I always said that here on JDR we would never hide anything we have behind a “registered members” only wall. And I am proud, to this day, that we don’t. You don’t have to register to read or see anything here. I’m so proud that you trust us for your latest Depp news.
Let’s see, let’s look at some numbers, since we started as a book discussion group, we’ve discussed thirty nine books, and we’ve been honored with the pleasure of interviewing twenty two authors and actors here on JDR!
So many people to thank, so I’ll just start, for those at the beginning, most especially Carol, a wonderful friend and our dear web guru who does her level best to keep us online! She's endured eight years of panicked phone calls from me when we go offline and answered hundreds of questions with great patience. Thanks Joanie, for making us gorgeous! Joanie blesses us, we are ever grateful for her talent and we are always joyous when looking at her blends and JDR homepage banner!
To the mods there at the very beginning, and those who joined us along the way, most have moved on in other directions in their lives and we wish them all well and thank them for everything they did for us! Jeppody, JP, MerryK, Cathy, Wendy, Holly and Momosanla. They all offered their time, their thoughts and their ideas. Thanks to Pierrot for her insights and video work. And a big thanks to our mods today: Herestoyou (Donna), Mim!E, Joanie and NurseAnne8. Y’all help me so much!
To all of those authors who took the time to visit with me, to tell the people on a Johnny Depp forum about their book and their works – thanks so much! I’m truly blessed to call many of them true friends.
I want to thank the wonderful woman who put on the very first “DeppCon” out in LA in the fall of 2004. It was that trip where I met so many of you all! So many are true friends and trusted allies. I thank her, and you. SO many people that I can’t name you all. You know who you are, we party, love Depp and have great fun in his name.
JDR is an act of love, given to the artist, musician, gentleman and actor who is Johnny Depp.
To the person who was there way before the first day, who thought we could do this! She is now a dear and trusted friend of over eight years: (Jeppody) Anne. Her life has taken her in another direction now, but she still pops in from time to time. Her help, advice and support is a gift that I value to this very day. Without her, JDR would not exist as it is today. I am eternally grateful to her.
And now, to each and every one of you, who continue to visit, to follow us on Twitter, who join in discussions or who just come by to see what we’re talking about every day. I’ve always said that our JDR community is the best group there is! Thank you!
On with the celebration!
Over the next few days, we’ll be looking back a bit, remembering the films and the happenings here at JDR!
And we'll be talking about what's up next for us!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JDR! It's hard to believe it's already been 8 years. They have been wonderful years of sharing with many friends. Karen, you developed such a fantastic community of people. I thank you for your steadfast, hard work. I know it takes many hours to keep JDR running smoothly. Thank you for the many interviews you conducted. We learn so much more about the books and the insight of the authors and actors. I enjoy reading everyone's opinions and it is nice that even though we may have different opinions, all the opinions are treated with respect. I know JDR will keep growing because it is a fun place to share our love of Mr. Depp. Also, thank you for letting me continue with my small contributions. I may not comment too often, but I do enjoy reading the wonderful comments.

Eight years?!?!? Wow, time sure flies when you're having fun.
Thank you, Karen! This site is so much fun, and even though I don't get here as often as I'd like, it still holds a very special place in my heart.
This is the #1 place for honest Johnny news, and I'm always looking forward to reading about the next Johnny siting. I think I told Karen right from the beginning that I would NEVER be able to meet Johnny because I would sound like a babbling idiot, so I'm content reading about all of you who HAVE been brave enough to talk to him. Seriously, I don't want to meet him. I would, however, love to sit and listen to him play guitar like BuccaRoux was able to do. (God bless you for being able to talk to him without throwing up. LOL)
Anyway, here's to another eight years of fun, books and Johnny.
Thanks again, Karen.
