Or as society deems they should. Paul Kemp may not seem mutli-dimensional, but he is quite complex. What drives a talented man to stagnate and not attempt to have greater ambition? As most characters Johnny has portrayed, Kemp is hardly conventional. And hardly predicatable. Although he may try to use rum to placate his restlessness, Kemp is still tormented by inner urges to flee this life in search of another. To me, he wrestles with a yearning to grab at something greater. Yet he usually seems to let life merely wash over him mundanely- more like he exists than lives. --------------------

They are content to float through life, waiting for something to happen TO them. Kemp is not a mover and a shaker, but he is doing some soul searching, and that I think is what makes Kemp attractive to Johnny as an actor. --------------------
