I was honored to again be invited to a press screening of the latest DIsney movie, the live action version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

There's lots that I could say about this movie, but it boils down to did I enjoy it?
Yes I did!

There's no studio on earth, in my opinion, that does fantasy as well as Disney. And this is a fantasy movie that is magical, wondrous, and a gorgeous movie to watch. I mean it's stunningly, breathtakingly beautiful. Every scene, every frame. Spot on. Perfect.

I thought most all of the characters were well cast, however, I had issues with the casting of Luke Evans as Gaston. His acting was fine, but his own physical build didn't match the character who is know to be "roughly the size of a barge." Nope, not close. Not his fault, but geez Disney....when you have the actor singing lines like " I'm roughly the size of a barge!" and you hear low mutterings in the audience questioning that statement? A weak link. Nit picky? Maybe, but not when his size and physicality ARE a huge (pardon the pun) part of the snarky, nasty character.

I thought Emma Watson brought a literal new face to Belle! She was plucky, strong, sure of herself and had a clear idea of what she didn't want. Her voice is a bit thin, even with what I assume was done electronically to help strengthen her singing. However, her acting and portrayal, and what seemed to be a huge amount of respect for the character of Belle were strong and well defined. It was fun watching Belle's emotions wobble when she realizes that she's falling in love with THE beast.

Now, Dan Stevens was brilliant as The Beast. Before I saw the movie I thought that IF there was a "weak link" that it would be him. NOPE. NOPE NOPE. He was the strong link in the Beauty and the Beast chain. He made it all work. Steadily and surely, you knew what the Beast/Prince was thinking, feeling. Somehow Stevens was able to let the audience in, he let the audience feel what pain the Beast/Prince had. And it showed. And it worked.

Costumes, make up, set design, sound, musical numbers, special effects are all award worthy!

Ahhh Mr. Director? Did you mean to pay homage to THE SOUND OF MUSIC in that
scene that had everyone singing "the hills are alive with the sound of music"? Cuz if you did? You led your audience out of Belle's world both emotionally and mentally. Silly thing to do. As it took a bit for people to find their way back to Belle. Or that's what I think.

All in all? A big 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Captain Jack is back! Savvy?

Thanks for the review Karen--the sets, costumes, etc do looking stunning just from the trailers I've seen. Thanks for your thoughts on the characters---I'm hoping to see this in theaters at some point....
