Is This Novel Johnny Depp's Next Movie?
JUNE 26, 2013

by Lindsay Miller

Johnny Depp is planning to adapt the comedic crime novel The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery for the big screen. We recently interviewed Depp in Santa Fe, NM, as he promoted The Lone Ranger, and he told us he's hopeful the project will be his next. "There's a great series of books by a guy named Kyril Bonfiglioli called The Mortdecai Trilogy," he said. "There's one called The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, and it's a very funny series of books and a very interesting character."

The fictional star of Bonfiglioli's books is Charlie Mortdecai — a wealthy art dealer with a penchant for good food, bourbon, and fine clothes — who frequently finds himself caught up in strange cases of crime and espionage. The final novel in the series, The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, revolves around his investigation into the death of a woman at Oxford college . . . as well as his obsessive maintenance of his facial hair. The off-kilter book was widely praised by critics when it was published after the author's death in 1996.

Sources tell us the project is currently in the early stages of development at Warner Brothers, but there's no script or director attached to the film as of yet.

The role would be in keeping with Depp's attraction to quirky characters in recent years, from Captain Jack Sparrow to the thinly veiled version of Hunter S. Thompson he played in both Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Rum Diary. The actor is currently filming Transcendence alongside Morgan Freeman and Kate Mara, and while he was slated to shoot the Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass soon after, he backed out of the project in late May following a reported pay dispute.

I love hearing what he has read or is reading. I swear next time I see and get to talk to him I must ask him that wonderful question...

Anyway, this sounds so cool. I think I could see him in that role. it's kind of like where he is in life... maybe a little older, kind of a ... Banacek or Sherlock Holmes mayve sort of (loosely) sort of guy.. Hmmm. fine brandy, fine books, fine art and still a challenge of figuring out the mystery or whatever.

(For those who have no idea who Banacek was or is... ck out a 1980's TV programme of the same. I loved it)...

Yeah, I gotta ck this one out.

Thanks, Johnny.

DEAL CENTRAL

Johnny Depp to Star in 'Mortdecai' for Lionsgate, Director David Koepp (Exclusive)
Project is an adaptation of Kyril Bonfiglioli's comedic crime novel "The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery"
Published: July 10, 2013 @ 4:58 pm

Johnny Depp is nearing a deal to star in David Koepp's "Mortdecai," an adaptation of Kyril Bonfiglioli's comedic crime novel "The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery" that Lionsgate has acquired after Warner Bros. put it in turnaround, TheWrap has learned.

Koepp will direct from a script he wrote based on an earlier draft by Eric Aronson ("On the Line").

Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance will produce the movie with Depp and his Infinitum Nihil partner Christi Dembrowski.

Lionsgate execs Erik Feig, Michael Paseornek, Gillian Bohrer and James Myers will oversee the project for the studio.

"Mortdecai" was in development for years at Warners but never got off the ground despite the fact that Depp was attached to star and his "Secret Window" collaborator Koepp, one of Hollywood's most trusted screenwriters, was set to direct.

Depp told BuzzSugar on June 26 that he was hopeful the project would be his next picture, as "it's a very funny series of books and a very interesting character."

Depp is in negotiations to play Charlie Mortdecai, a wealthy art dealer and part-time rogue who frequently finds himself caught up in strange cases of crime and espionage.

Story follows Mortdecai as he races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. Of course, he'll have to contend with angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist first.

"The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery" is the fourth and final book in a series featuring the character. Bonfiglioli died in 1996 and Craig Brown finished the book, which received strong reviews upon its post-posthumous publication.

Depp is aiming to squeeze the project in between two Disney movies -- "Into the Woods," in which he plays a supporting role as the Wolf, and "Pirates of the Caribbean 5," which is expected to start filming early next year. "Mortdecai" could start production as soon as October.

Depp, who can currently be seen in Disney's "The Lone Ranger," will wrap Wally Pfister's sci-fi movie "Transcendence" shortly. He's repped by UTA.

A veteran screenwriter of blockbusters including "Jurassic Park," Koepp recently wrote Paramount's "Jack Ryan" reboot starring Chris Pine, and he also wrote and directed the Joseph Gordon-Levitt thriller "Premium Rush." He's repped by CAA, which also reps Aronson.

Thanks so much for the updates on this project! I love David Koepp and think this is a perfect director for Johnny and this project!!

We first posted about this back in June, when we heard about it during the LONE RANGER junket.

I've combined these two threads to keep all of the Mortdecai info together. Posts in combined threads show in chronological order.

Johnny Depp starrer “Mortdecai” is coming together quickly with eyes on an all-star cast as Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor are in talks to co-star with Depp.

Lionsgate is distributing and David Koepp is directing the crime drama.

“Mortdecai,” based on the three-part series of books by Kyril Bonfiglioli, follows Charles Mortdecai, an antihero art dealer and rogue who is in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

After contract disputes over Whitey Bulger pic “Black Mass,” Depp moved quickly to line up his next project.

Andrew Lazar, Depp and Christi Dembrowski are producing. Eric Aronson wrote the “Mortdecai” script.

Erik Feig, Michael Paseornek, Gillian Bohrer and James Myers will oversee the project for the studio.

Lionsgate looks to be fast-tracking the project with a high-profile team after it languished for years in development limbo.

The film will probably go into production in the fourth quarter of this year, after Depp wraps production on the Disney pic “Into the Woods.”

Paltrow’s projects this include “Iron Man 3″ and the indie “Thanks For Sharing,” while McGregor was seen in “The Impossible” and “Jack the Giant Slayer” with “August: Osage County” bowing this fall.

Paltrow is repped by UTA and Brillstein Entertainment and McGregor is repped by UTA and United Agents.
