When Pirates of the Caribbean III: At Worlds End is released in theatres this upcoming May, Molokai residents will recognize some familiar shores. Filming is currently taking place at Pohauku Mauliuli Beach (Make Horse), with its towering cliff as a backdrop.
The cast- including Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly - are staying at Paniolo Hale. A lighting technician described the filming taking place as a "big love scene" between their characters- Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.
Although crew members spent several days on the beach constructing the set, the major Hollywood celebrities flew in the morning of Tuesday, January 9.
Captain Jack Sparrow, the lead character played by heartthrob Johnny Depp, is not acting in these scenes and, to the disappointment of Depp's fans, is not on-island.
Security and food service for the cast and crew are being provided in conjunction with the Molokai Ranch.
A helicopter flew overhead while pockets of spectators gathered to try to get a glimpse of the celebrities. Tight security kept Molokai residents and tourists off the beaches and out of the filming sightlines.
As the sun set on Tuesday January 9, a group of about fifty individuals gathered at the 10th hole of the Kaluakoi Golf Course. To their delight, Orlando Bloom crossed the course while driving a golf cart, clad in a maroon pirate shirt and a green cap. "It was so romantic- he blew me a kiss!" said Kelly Forsberg after Bloom passed by.
The first two Pirates of the Caribbean films were wildly successful. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (the second) grossed $55.8 million on its opening day. In film history, this was the largest opening day and largest single day gross. Capitalizing on the popularity of these films, Pirates of the Caribbean III is being filmed back-to-back with Pirates of the Caribbean II.
