According to the LA Times, Johnny is supposed to appear at a special preview showing at the Hollywood ArcLight theater this Tuesday. I'm not convinced this is correct but it might be worth going both to see the film AND just in case...

He does narrate or appear in some of the film, but usually at the Arclight, I think people don't interrupt the film to talk, which is what the LA Times article seems to imply. Perhaps he would join the producer after the film for the Q&A, which I assume would be at 10 pm.

It would be pretty cool if someone could take notes about what is said during the Q&A.

I find this statement very confusing because of Johnny narrating the film.

He reads in the documentary. . . I can't see why he would read during the showing. The way the article is written doesn't make any sense, at least to me. :unsure:

I don't doubt he may be on hand, as carpediem suggested.

I'm wondering if this would be true because, with this being the last week for Johnny to be filming in Chicago, I wouldn't think he would be able to take the time to fly back to LA for this event.

While we understand that there still is 5 days worth of filming left in Chicago, we don't know how much, if any, involves Johnny. Really, the only thing we can guess with any kind of certainty is that he will be in LA next Sunday/Monday for the dogtrack scene.

I was told by one of the crew members that Johnny would be filming through the 27th. I guess you can take that information with a grain of salt because you never really now just how much information some of the crew have, but that's what I was told. And I suppose he could not be involved in every scene and be able to return to LA for a day.

For those of you who asked me, I've heard from the PR person and this is not a premiere of any kind. And they confirmed that the press screening is in LA tonight as well.

I have spoken with the Arclight in Hollywood they will not confirm if JD will be there or not and they will not say he will not be there. It is a wait and see moment I suppose. They do confirm the Q&A with the Director after the film as stated.

I just returned from the Arclight---and the Charlie Rose show is on---great bits about Johnny on CRose!

These are just my impressions and I hope others that attended(great to see you all there) will chime in with their thoughts.

FIrst--Johnny was not there, but we pretty much figured that, so I wasn't disappointed. Johnny narrates throughout and there's a few scenes of him reading from Hunter's work, but he's not one that was interviewed. Johnny has such a great voice for reading Hunter's work--loved that part. They show clips from FALILV with Johnny of course.

Soundtrack was great--CCR/Stones/Dylan/etc--all songs that Hunter enjoyed.

The movie focused on Hell's Angels/Fear&Loathing in Las Vega/Fear&Loathing on the Campaign Trail/Nixon/McGovern/Carter and Bush comparisons. Jumped somewhat from Carter to the end of his life. There was lots of news footage/private/family video as well. THose interviewed that I recall was Sandi(first wife)/Anita(second wife). McGovern/Pat Buchanan/Jimmy Buffet/Gary Hart/Jann Wenner/Juan(Hunter's son)/Ralph Steadman--that's all I can remember.

The Q&A was a little disappointing--Gibney was not there, but a producer(can't remember her name) was the guest. Unfortunately, they immediately opened it up for questions so I thought the moderator didn't do that well in that aspect. There were only about 3 questions.
One Question:Something about how did they get the musical artists to agree to have their works played. THe reply was that the artists pretty much either donated the usage of their songs or charged very little.

Second Question:How did they decide what to cut out? She responded it was very difficult so they focused on what made Hunter famous and when he was at the top,

Third Question: Did Johnny Depp pay for Hunter's funeral? She said, yes, he paid for the monument, party and to have guests flown in for the funeral.

That pretty much was it---if you're a fan of Hunter, you'll enjoy the doc---if you're not a fan, you won't. If you don't care either way, they you might enjoy it. I found it very interesting...,,

I am sorry that they did not seem to have much with the Q & A. Wonder if they had conflicting schedules and they just settled for what they got. After hearing your review of the music. I am thinking my son will want to go with me as that is a style of music that he is into right now. (especially CCR).

It was quite a ride. Knew Johnny could not be there. It was wonderful to seeand hear Johnny throughout the film. It was interesting to me. Nice ot learn more about Hunter S. Thompson. My opinion has not changed about him but I wnet to see the film with an open mind. A must see for fans of Hunter S Thompson I agree. Johnny was and is a dear and close friend of the man. Bless him.

Great write-up Donna! I agree and thought it was very interesting. Even if you're not a fan of Hunter's, it does give you an idea of where he was coming from. And the music was great, as well as hearing Johnny's lovely voice reading passages throughout.

The Q & A was awkward. When the moderator asked the audience for questions no one said anything. You could hear crickets. Finally one person raised their hand. This happened 3 times and that was it. I felt bad for the producer that no one asked anything. But it was still a fun show and everyone should take the ride if they get the chance!

Thank you to all for the wonderful reviews. Being a big fan of Hunters, I'm anxious to see this. It will be in my area in July.
