They identify the wrong person as his agent, but this is a sweet story. :)

Ha. I just showed the article to Evan and he wondered if Johnny would want to give him his "stripey cat in the hat hat" and maybe we can ask him in Joliet...Oh my boy. I think Evan is pushing his luck.

You'd have a lot of upset fans if you took an old favorite like the striped beanie! :P

This is a dear story and a tribute to not just Johnny but the people surrounding him. Karen, I think they might have used the wrong term (Hollywood-wise) with agent and meant it more as representative. It could well have been Christi. It sounds like the boy's family made sure to follow up on Johnny's comment so they must have had some 'in' to get to him. I wonder if Johnny had someone give them an email address.

Karen - June 16, 2008 04:06 AM (GMT)
Good point about the use of the word "agent" being representative, as I think it was Christi. I think sometimes people don't know or understand the differences in agent, manager, publicist etc. LOL Thanks Fan!

SavvyGurl - June 16, 2008 05:29 AM (GMT)
What a great story! The kindness and generosity of this man never ceases to amaze me.

Filming days are rapidly coming to a close, if you are in any of the areas where they will be filming in the next few days and haven't had a chance to see Johnny yet, I hope that you get out there and give it a try.

sandsitive - June 16, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
This is just ONE of the reason I respect Johnny. What a great person he is! :D

Depp-Nightwish-Fan - June 16, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
Owww how sweet!! God that family is sooo lucky :D So cool of him!

Osh - June 16, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
I wonder if it wasn't the brown hat Johnny was wearing at the start og the meet and greets and not a "costume" fedora? We haven't seen that hat in quite a bit.

All I can say is just wow what a man he is. :thumbsup
Unbelievable awesome always! :bow :captainjack

Here's the photo that goes with the story. The hat looks like the one he wore the first day of shooting in Columbus and when arriving back in Wisconsin on the way to the Mirror Lake shoot:

Here's a comparison. If you adjust for differences in lighting/color cast that exists in different cameras and natural vs. artificial light and remove the ribbon around the crown, they look much the same. If it's not Johnny's, I'll bet it was another used for filming.

That really so sweet. But being Johnny I am not surprised he very generous.

That must have made that families day to get all that for all the kids. And to have a promise kept.

herestoyou - June 17, 2008 12:43 AM (GMT)
FAN thanks for the pics and detective work there! :)

Osh-thanks for the link to the video---he is a cute little guy. I think it will be hard for mom to wrestle that hat from him to put in a shadow box though-lol

Based on what we see in the video, I don't think that's one of Johnny's used hats - personal or film - at all. Despite what the article says, it looks pretty new to me.

If you look at the pic on Osh's blog(scroll down a bit at the link) from 4/14, there's a nice side view of Johnny's fedora that night. The color is different, dark brown, but it has the same type band as the one given to the boy. Now maybe it wasn't the exact same one, but I would imagine it could have come from Johnny's personal collection....

I guess it's pretty useless to ponder since we'll never know. My guess is that someone in Johnny's office went out and purchased a hat locally and packaged it with the CATCF goodies for the family. I very much doubt it's one of Johnny's own and the band is wrong for being a movie hat. Johnny's note seems very carefully worded so as to not imply it's anything other than a hat and came from him. Legally he'd have to be sure he's not claiming it to be something it's not as that would imply a collector value that may not be true.

Karen - June 17, 2008 01:37 PM (GMT)
The video was great!! WOO HOO!

Johnny's note does not say it was THE hat he was wearing. It says
QUOTE
Here is a hat  for you.

It very well could have been something purchased for filming and not used, something from his personal colelction or purchased for this young man. Who knows? LOL Not us. ;)

What's important is that Johnny kept a promise to a young fan.

And that's they way he is. Sweet, kind and a man of his word. :D

We are thankful.

I may be the voice of dissent here and have an unpopular opinion, but...

I think it's awesome that Johnny sent the hat and all that other stuff.

I think the parents stepped over the line tracking him down. I'm sorry, but what did they say "When you were in Oshkosh you said you'd give our son your hat. Here's our address - and oh, we have 5 kids." Tacky.

I'm sorry for being snarky, and I do think it's great that Johnny followed through, but I can't help but feel like he now felt he HAD to do it, as opposed to doing it because he wanted to. His note to the kid said "As Requested" not "As promised" I just hope this doesn't give other people ideas.

I apologize if this offends anyone, that was not my intention.

raetherese - June 17, 2008 05:28 PM (GMT)
No, SC, while I founded the story sweet too, I felt there was something off in some of the commentary by the parents in the interview. JD is a great guy, I just hate to see people take advantage of his genorosity.

I hope he doesn't get bombarded with requests now.

Again, nice story and thanks for sharing.

No offense taken.

What bothers me was not so much that they contacted his production company ( how else would he know where to send it, maybe someone told them after Johnny moved on to contact the office with the info) but that they got the press involved.

That is was bothers me.

I think he did a nice thing.

SarcasticCheese - June 17, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
Yes, it's the press part that bothers me too.

Johnny is the best. :D
