Title: Tim Burton and Dark Shadows

Thanks, Rose! If true, and it sounds like it, I'll bet Johnny is tickled to bring a project to Tim rather than the other way around!

Karen - June 2, 2008 12:31 PM (GMT)
Yes this appears to be true. And it appears that John August is attached as well.

On a personal note, as a fan of Dark Shadows and Johnny's I am thrilled beyond words to see this project move forward. But I'm not so thrilled with Burton, I'm afraid it'll be Sweeney Todd as a vampire set in modern times. Nothing new or exciting. I hope he proves me wrong.

Ihope this is true. I love Tim Burton and I know the two of them working together would be wonderful to see. It seems to be true. I am looking forward tot his. Hope Johnny will play Barnabus Collins.

I am also looking forward to this project. :snoopy And with Tim Burton I think it would be awesome. :thumbsup Johnny as a vampire? What do you want more! ;)

Karen - June 2, 2008 03:08 PM (GMT)
LOL I want something different. ;)

I hear ya, Karen, and share your thoughts. We'll almost certainly get the trademarked Burton look to the film. Hopefully TB won't go over the top in gory effects or mock-horror which would just serve to limit its general appeal. We know that Johnny loves making films with Tim and is a different, more relaxed person when he gets to do promotions with him. I think we'll just need to accept that every few films of Johnny's will be with Tim. They may not end up being as diverse as we wanted or hoped for but these two can still surprise us. As long as Johnny spreads his wings with other directors in between times, he'll get the challenge he needs to continue to grow and we'll get something very different. I hope he does more with major mainstream directors like Mann. Personally I'd love to see him do a film with Eastwood or the Coens.

Christine M - June 2, 2008 04:10 PM (GMT)
This is great news and FAN I agree with you, but I want them to stay true to the original Dark Shadows. And another but, I know that may not happen and I will accept whatever he and Johnny do. Hopefully, they will surprise us!! :snoopy

Thanks deppaholic for posting the links.

Okay, it would also be okay if it would be someone else then Burton of course. ;) But just the fact that Johnny and Tim are great together I think this would be something to look forward. :thumbsup Anyway I would love to see Johnny as a Vampire. :D

Depputante - June 2, 2008 06:12 PM (GMT)
Oh, this sounds great. Thanks for the news! :D

Karen - June 2, 2008 07:03 PM (GMT)
I'm glad that so many are so excited about Dark Shadows!! woohoo I am too really because I just adore this classic soap opera, I'm just disappointed that it's Burton, again.

I have this huge foreboding *fear* that the team has gotten too comfortable with each other, too many films in too few years. I can already see Helena Bonham Carter as Maggie Evans/Josette Du Pris. bah

I do hope that they find something new within their collective creative selves. I used to depend on Burton for films that were different and exciting. Johnny always manages to find the new and exciting, but Tim lately seems to do the same tratment over and over. I hope I am wrong. Oh boy do I hope I am wrong.

Amy - June 2, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
I agree with you on this, Karen. As much as I love Tim and Johnny working together there's that feeling of it being the same all over again. So as you said I really hope that this is gonna be different from their other collaborations. Actually, just the pure thought of Johnny playing a vampire excites me! woohoo

Karen - June 2, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
Ahhhhh yes! Johnny the Vampire.... :claphands

More dental issues!

Christine M - June 2, 2008 08:55 PM (GMT)
hmmm...imagining Johnny as Barnabas. I can do that. I actually thought Jonathan Frid was quite attractive, but to think of Johnny being the new Barnabas, now that well . . . :thud

And Karen, as for the dental issues, I can't see him walking around with fangs like he did gold teeth, but who knows!!

Sparrowette - June 2, 2008 09:55 PM (GMT)
:upinsmoke Johnny as a vampire is so appealing and appetising!

I look forward to the creativity of both of these talented men. Everything Tim has done has been creative and visually stunning as well as different. I think they will stay true to the original and try to improve on it.

I used to watch Dark Shadows when I was a kid (every weekday morning, 8am, Sci-fi channel :D), and sort of grew up with them. Does anyone else remember the remakes in the early 90s with Ben Cross as Barnabas?? LOL

My first thought was "YES!" because I always thought that should a film version come into fruition, it should be a Burton film with Johnny as lead. However, I truly hope Helena doesn't get casted as Josette/Maggie. Nothing against her at all, quite the opposite, but I fear it would prove Tim's critics correct regarding the nepotism claims. I just don't think she's right for the part. However, I wouldn't mind seeing Christina Ricci or even Winona Ryder (though I HIGHLY doubt the latter will happen). As I completely jump ahead

wwjdd - June 2, 2008 11:52 PM (GMT)
I'm looking forward to this.

Karen, I felt like you when I first heard that Tim might be associated, but the more I've thought about it the more I warm up to the idea. I thought Tim did an outstanding job with ST so I'm not as apprehensive as I was. Although, I agree...the thought of HBC in the Maggie/Josette role does not give me warm fuzzies.

I would just like for Tim to tone down the Kabuki-type makeup a bit though. I know it's a vampire we're talking about in this case, but that extreme white is distracting to me, and Tim seems to "see" Johnny that way too much.

Now, if we just hear for certain that Johnny has committed to the lead role I'll be in heaven.

herestoyou - June 3, 2008 01:16 AM (GMT)
Very interesting news indeed--I've read everyone's thoughts here and I do see all the opinions on this one. I have to say I wouldn't mind Tim directing and Johnny starring. As for HBC--instead of Josette/Maggie, (don't think he would want to repeat a STodd couple)---wasn't there a "bad" lady that came back into the story at one point---love the way Helena plays the "villianess". If not Tim, I just don't know who would"get" the whole Dark Shadows style-----Tim has mentioned that he was a huge fan when younger, too, so I hope he'll bring something special to the film..........

I hope the screenplay can weave a great story-there are so many episodes and stories to be told-huge endeavor! Tim, Johnny, and Helena seem to be a package deal-so no surprise if she ends up cast in the film-I still look forward to this film making its way to the big screen. :) Anne r

Thank you for the posts. I watched Dark Shadows as well, back in the 60's while being babysat by the neighbor. I liked it, too. And from the second link it sounds like Shantaram may still get filmed. I really like Mira Nair. I think she will make a beautiful film and we'll get to see Johnny in a different role once again. B)

Me&Mick - June 3, 2008 10:19 AM (GMT)
As much as I love Tim and as much as I enjoy his collaborations with Johnny, I have to agree with Karen also. Maybe because we are just coming off Sweeney Todd? I do not think Dark Shadows will be served well with an overabundant Burtonesque look. I watched the original TV Series faithfully and even enjoyed the short lived series with Ben Cross. Yes, Vampires are technically dead, but on film and television the ones who have enjoyed success and public appeal are the ones that do not look like Zombies. There is a certain sexuality and romance when it comes to Vamps, bringing to mind Langella, Pitt, Townsend, the newest Vamp heartthrob Alex O'Connor and my personal favorite, David Boreanaz. And who can put all these to shame but Johnny Depp. Depending on what era you choose, Cesar or Roux with an appetite for blood.

I agree with Karen and Susanne. I was so hoping for something new and fresh. This collaboration has been wonderful, but now I fear too predictable.

Karen - June 3, 2008 01:21 PM (GMT)
I am keeping my fingers crossed about this one. Because I just love Dark Shadows and I hope Tim tries to stay true to the old feeling of DS and not go "Sweeney" on us. LOL Tim has done brilliant before.... :crossfingers

This bit about Kathryn Leigh Scott is pretty interesting, seems she send her complete set of DS books to Johnny. Oh I can see him as Barnabas now. woohoo Read the item below:

Susanne, I think you nailed my fears. I think we are perhaps too close to Sweeney. And in some ways, Corpse Bride too. Sure has that DS look to me.

BUT....I so want to see this film happen....

Johnny as a vampire...sounds like a dream come true! woohoo

NowI have to admit I have never seen any of the Dark Shadows series as we never got it here in the UK.But from all the posts Iv'e readthe show sounded amazing. As soon as I get back from vacation I'm going to order a copy of the series from amazon so I can catch up.
So I can't say whether HBC would be good or bad in any of the roles. But it may be academic anyway,if the movie is made next year. She is likely to be fully employed with the last two Harry Potter movies. They start shooting next February and are going to take over 12 months to shoot both movies back to back.HBC who plays Bellatrix lestrange is featured heavily in the last book so it will probably be the same for the movies.
Anyway whatever happens I think it's going to be a great movie. When Johnny and Tim get together something magical always happens.I also think its really cool that Johnny has given Tim a job this time round makes a nice change. As to whether Johnny will play Barnabus come on. He's wanted to be this guy since he was a kid can you really see him letting anyone else play the part. Its like HBC and her wanting to play Mrs Lovett since she was 11.No I think we can safely say that when this movie gets made Johnny will be playing Barnabus.

Can I ask a question? I don't mean to be confrontational or anything but why do so many people want to see Johnny as a vampire? I don't understand the draw there. I like the tv series Moonlight and am sad it wasn't renewed but it had a relatively different spin on the vampire legend. While I enjoyed DS when it was on, I'm neutral about seeing a film version of the rather ludicrous/fantastical story, even (especially?) with Johnny in it. There are so many other rumored projects of his that I'd rather see go ahead. Ah well, at least there are PE and, hopefully, Shantaram for me to get excited about and I'll be first in line when DS is released. ;)

I don't know Fan, but there is something, for me, about THIS character. The Barnabas Collins character. I like Moonlight and hate that it's not coming back, I like Meyers' Twilight series. To me it's the Barnabas element. Maybe it takes me back to those young teen years, when Barnabas was just too :upinsmoke .

And he was older than my own Dad was at the time. For me, it's the Vampire Barnabas Collins.

Depp-Nightwish-Fan - June 3, 2008 07:31 PM (GMT)
I've never seen DS but it sounds really cool! My first tought was COOL! but well... Sweeney Todd was just last year (ST even isn't in the stores here yet so..) so the time between their films together is just so short. I think the media is gonna write things about "they are always together, they don't know when to stop"and I guess more of that sort. They really dont deserve that things.
I think Tim can make a film like this as one of the best but as I said the time between ST and a new film is to short.
Of course Johnny as a vampire, I really don't want to miss that! :D

Actually I gotta admit that I don't know the Barnabas Collins character, 'cause I've never seen Dark Shadows (it was never shown here in Switzerland)...but vampire characters just kinda fascinate me. I loved BTVS's Angel and I absolutely love Meyer's Twilight series. I never saw Moonlight, actually but it does sound interesting. I guess it's just with vampires there's always that connotation of them being somewhat sexy. It goes back a long time in history actually with all the vampire lore. Other than characters such as werewolves and the likes, vampires in most stories have the nature of luring their prey in by charming them first. They're not like zombies or other monsters...in all the vampire stories they always have a somewhat special and very intriguing aura. So I guess that's why I'd really love to see Johnny playing a vampire...he's smoking hot anyway, but him playing such a character would just be :upinsmoke

*hehe* That's how I see it anyway. Am interested what others think though. :)

BTW, no matter how much I'd love to see Johnny playing a vampire, I'd also prefer to see Shantaram being made first 'cause I really love that book!!

I don't think that's confrontational at all FAN. It's a valid question and I'll answer from my own point of view.

I vaguely remember watching DS when I was a kid, but it made a lasting emotional impression on me. I was also (I think luckily) brought up when there were nearly always classic Universal monster movies on the Saturday matinee on t.v., as well as many of the Hammer films of the seventies. So the entire genre, and especially the vampire legend has been a lifelong favorite of mine. At the same time I was reading horror fiction so I was immersed in vampire stories and, in my opinion, one of the bedrocks of the vampire myth is the undertone (or in the case of the Hammer films, the overt overtone) of sexuality.

So when I hear they're making DS, that Johnny is not only involved it now sounds likely he'll star, and the character he'll play is an iconic American "cult" character that I rememberr from childhood, I'm close to nirvana. I consider him to be the most talented actor of our generation, at the very least, and one of the sexiest men alive so it's like a no-lose situation to me in most respects.

Just my opinion-and pardon the drying drool spots in this post :D

Me&Mick - June 3, 2008 11:43 PM (GMT)
Yes the cancellation of Moonlight really annoyed me, also.

Simple answer - for me anyway. I have been fascinated by vamps since my sixth grade teacher read the class Stoker's classic. And very hauntingly I might add. And have studied all the folklore-a version of my own Annotated Dracula help me graduate from college. Then of course the Queen herself Anne Rice gave vampires new life. Len Wiseman's Underworld trilogy - Bill Nighy floored me.
I like them. And I like them being portrayed well. And if vamps are not one of your favorite demons, I can see Johnny's portrayal may be uninteresting to you.
They are more than creatures of the night; vampires are troubled souls, complex, vulnerable yet powerful as Barnabus was in DS. Me - I am excited and from what I have been reading Johnny is excited too. He may even turn out to be my favorite vampire.

For me personally, I Love vampires. To me they are sexy and romantic and I would love to live forever! Johnny would make a great vampire. He would understand the pleasure and pain of being one and would be able to bring alot to the role. DS was a great tv show all about vampires it was more of a Soap Opera with a different theme. I alos loved Port Charles it was a soap opera about Vampires too. This is my opinion and why I woiuld love to see Johnny play a vampire.

Okay. After reading everyones' thoughts on the JD/TB combo for Dark Shadows, I have a question for you. (Hope this is okay to ask Karen on this thread).

Knowing the characters of Dark Shadows, who would you have playing what?

If you need a reminder of all the characters here is a link.

Btw, next to Barnabas, Angelique was my favorite. I felt sorry for her. And I think Helena would make a good Dr. Julia Hoffman.
