Title: JDR's Summer 08 book discussion is a new idea ....
Description: Something different for the whole family
Karen - May 20, 2008 04:36 AM (GMT)
JohnnyDeppReads announces our 2008 summer book!
Join us July 8th as we embark on a new kind of adventure!
We'll be talking about Brian Selznick's
Caldecott Award winning book!

This is going to be something different for us here at JohnnyDeppReads, this time it won't be just adults discussing this amazingly imaginative book, this time we'd like to include your family's participation too!
We encourage those of you with kids in your life to share this wonderful book with them.
Perhaps see what they have to say about Hugo and Isabelle and their adventures in the Paris railroad station of 1933 with an automaton, then share those thoughts and ideas with us.
AND ... here's the really fun part!
Since the kiddies are out of school for the summer, we'd love to see everyone's attempt at a silent movie. We know Johnny loves the classic, black and white silent movies and that he's used silent films stars such as Buster Keaton as inspirations for some of his characters, especially in Benny and Joon, when he mirrors Keaton's classic Roll Dance.
Oh no! What if you can't make a video?
Make a drawing or sketch of an automaton that you'd like to build!
Here's the challenge...
Take no more than 3 minutes to tell a story using the spirit of the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret.
It has to be "classic" silent movie style, and in black and white and "G" rated. Use whatever video sharing soft ware that you have. Or make us a black and white sketch of an automaton and then post the sketch and/or the link to the silent movie between July 8th and July 14th here on JDR in the forum that will be provided, while we discuss this awesome story and learn a bit about silent films and their makers and their stars too.
Sound like fun?
We hope so.
No prizes, no age limit...but what a great adventure for us all!
No kids around?
We still want you all to join in this discussion, it's a wonderful book for us all!
We want to give a big JDR shout out to NurseAnne8
for this really cool idea!

Hmmm. We're pretty busy around here, but I think my new digital camera does movies... need to get the India photos developed anyways. It's a good incentive. We'll try to read the book. Hope it isn't too thick!

It's about 500 pages, BUT it's a very fast read, it's more like a graphic novel in that there are pages and pages of sketches and artwork that also move the story forward.

JDR members I am glad there is some interest in "HUGO" -it is a great book and the history of the birth of silent film makes the book even more special. I look forward to the discussion. A special thanks to Karen for jump-starting this study. :) Anne r
