jeppody - May 11, 2008 09:00 AM (GMT)
Well, this is one party I would love to attend.....no invite has arrived yet though
I wasn't sure if this was a "Time will tell" or not, so I'll move it if you like, Karen.

*hehe* totally agree. Sounds like a great party! ;)
Anyway, I'd be happy to see some progress as far as "The Ginger Man" is concerned. :)

Thanks Anne for posting that one. There had also been some gossip this week about JP Donleavy inviting Johnny for some sort of picnic. I know that Donleavy and his partners have wanted to see Johnny in the Ginger Man so I asked around and found out that there is "some truth" to the basis of these rumors.
But we know that some things can also be speculation. ;)
THis is a project that is dear to my heart and I'd love to see it happen.

Was just coming in to post this but I see my friend on the other side of the pond already got it woohoo It does sound like a nice party!
Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

:crossfingers maybe it will happen Donleavy is not getting any younger and it would be great for him to see his most popular book on the screen. Anne r

Would be cool if it happens.
Sounds like that could be a great party.

I have to admit I don't know a whole lot about Donleavy's book, but have seen the piece where Johnny met him for the first time and talked to him about his book. I loved reading that piece and seeing the photo of Johnny with JP Donleavy. From the photo you can really tell how much Johnny was enjoying his conversation with Donleavy. If this is true (which according to Karen a pretty chance is), that is great news for JD and JP Donleavy fans. Can't wait to hear further details on the project!
Here is the photo I was talking about

(Karen, I can't find where this photo is taken from, I believe it was taken at a celebration in NY. I have a feeling you know where it's from, so I'm hoping you can credit the site the photo is from. I'm sorry for not knowing.)

That photo was taken at the Ginger Man bar in NYC on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the book's publication. It was on or about October 30, 2005. Here's another, taken by Terry Gruber:

Thanks FAN for posting the photo credit, background info, and another photo of Johnny and Mr. Donleavy.

THanks for the link Anne-- :crossfingers that this project finally gets off the ground! :)

Fan's right about where the picture was taken, it originated on this site
http://www.jpdonleavycompendium.org/ that's run by an associate of JPD's.
I've been told that this latest "rumor" about JD meeting JPD mid June is not correct. However, the rumors that were floating around earlier this month, of an invitation to meet with JDP again, have some validity. Right now, that's all that I can say.
I'm keeping my :crossfingers

Karen,
Thanks for the clarification on the "news" articles and for sharing what you can about the particular events involving Johnny and Mr. Donleavy.
The festival in Ireland really sounds interesting and would be a real treat to attend. Hopefully there will be write ups after the event to read.

Baawahaha! My husband loves Donleavy! That is how I came to read some of his stuff. So once again JD will prove to draw him in. (he loved reading PE)
I really hope this project gets off the ground. And SOON. woohoo

Guys I am going to this Festival in Dublin Wednesday June 11th. JP Donleavy is giving a reading and it is rumoured that Johnny will be there. I will let you all know if Johnny turns up and if I get the opportunity I will enquire about the Ginger Man Movie and take some photos.

Looking forward to it, if I don't manage to get a word with Johnny i will try and ask JP Donleavy about it.

Hi guys just back from Dublin. Johnny wasn't there but I did get to meet JP Donleavy. Got him to sign my copy of The Ginger Man. He talked about the possibility of it being made into a film with Johnny although he said it probably wasn't going to happen. I think he was just being modest. You can listen to the entire interview over at my blog. I posted a link about halfway down my latest post.
Karen - June 17, 2008 01:28 PM (GMT)
THanks RonMexico for telling us that you did get to meet JPD! He's a very interesting man and I enjoyed my dinner with him. He's great to be with.
I think that he was being modest too, I personally have not given up hope. ;)
herestoyou - June 17, 2008 05:39 PM (GMT)
Just a little tidbit----Donleavy mentioned that he was surprised that a lot of younger people are now discovering TGM. I loaned my copy to my 23 year old son and he loved it. He was visiting for my daughter's graduation and I asked him if he still had it--he had loaned it to his roommate to read, also age 23----so yes, the book is attracting a younger group, too. I'm glad my copy is getting so much use! :)

JPD will be glad to hear that Donna! ;)
