Depp, 'Public Enemies' make their way across Wisconsin

By Carrie Antlfinger

MILWAUKEE — The crew from the big-budget movie “Public Enemies” is continuing to make its way around Wisconsin, with additional filming expected this week.

Not only will locals get to perhaps glimpse big-name movie stars like Johnny Depp, Christian Bale or recent Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, but the filming is attracting tourists to local economies and the crew is spending money for services, renovations, supplies, lodging and dining.

The crew was in Columbus for three days last month, their first stint in the state, and brought in at least $350,000 for the city, Mayor Nancy Osterhaus said.

Film publicist Dave Fulton said the crew had been expected back there to film a driving scene and a home’s interior early this week, but that was postponed and had not yet been rescheduled as of Sunday. Fulton said the schedule was still being revised, but the crew was expected to be somewhere in Wisconsin this week.

“We’re thrilled,” Osterhaus said of the plans to return to Columbus. ”... It’s very good and I think it’s more fun the second time because we know a little more about what’s going on and how it should work.”

Fulton said that in the next couple of weeks, the crew also plans to shoot scenes at the Capitol in Madison and in Milwaukee at the 95-year-old Milwaukee County Historical Society building, which once was the Second Ward office of First Wisconsin Bank.

“Public Enemies” stars Depp as Dillinger, whose crime spree ended when he was shot to death in Chicago by FBI agents on July 22, 1934. It is directed and produced by University of Wisconsin graduate Michael Mann, and co-stars Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis and recent Oscar-winner Cotillard as Depp’s love interest.

According to the FBI’s Web site, from September 1933 until Dillinger died, he and his gang killed 10 men, wounded seven and robbed banks and police arsenals. He also staged three jail breaks, killing a sheriff during one and wounding two guards in another.

The movie is a screen adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s 2004 book “Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34.”

It’s the first to be filmed in Wisconsin since tax incentives for filmmakers took effect in January.

Last week, the crew was in Manitowish Waters in northern Wisconsin at Little Bohemia Lodge, the site of a famous 1930s shooting in the federal government’s chase for Dillinger and his gang.

Producers also have filmed in Oshkosh, Columbus and Darlington in Wisconsin, and Crown Point, Ind., Chicago and Aurora, Ill. For Oshkosh, this month’s filming has brought in an estimated $4 million in visitor spending and local production costs.

Fulton said the filming schedule changes constantly, but thought they would also film in other cities in the state before finishing in June.
