Title: Evelyn (Billie) Frechette
Description: Upset over Dillinger's death

A little while ago someone asked about Evelyn Frechette's reaction to Dillinger's death. I posed the question to Ellen Poulsen who wrote the book, Don't Call Us Molls: Women of the John Dillinger Gang published in 2002. She said the following,

The only thing that I uncovered was a letter written by Mary Kinder to Pete Pierpont. The letter is published in my book. Mary mentions that "Billie sure is blue," as Billie's mother died at around the same time as Dillinger, in an automobile accident. Billie also mentioned in a pamphlet called the March of Crime that she needed time, after her arrest, for her nerves to settle. So I am sure she was in bad shape after the arrest and Dillinger's death. |
After researching Evelyn Frechette I found her story to be a very sad one. Very little is on Ancestry.com (and other genealogy sites) about her. The only saving grace is that since she was American Indian the required records were preserved.
I'm really looking forward to see how the relationship begin her and Dillinger is played out in the film. This could be one of the kept best secrets of the film. As Rod said in his blog, would an Academy Award winning actress agree to such a small part? As in BB's book, Frechette's life was briefly touched on.
I guess, it's a wait and see.

Interesting info ChristineM..... thanks for sharing that.
It will be interesting to see how Michael Mann presents this story.....

Thanks for that info. Christine--I would imagine Billie would be upset at hearing about his death. I also feel that Dillinger's relationship with Billie will be an important part of the film. She spent quite a bit of time with Dillinger, so how could it not be? Of course, the movie is
based on PE and
not a documentary. I really hope they do have several scenes with Billie/Dillinger :shistle
Also, the link below has some great links with info. about Billie/Johnny D.

Karen,
Talking with Ellen Poulsen was very interesting. Needless to say, she has a heavy New York accent, which I loved hearing. She was very kind and had no problem with answering my questions. I read exerts of her book and recently ordered it. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she says about ALL the women in the group. She spent 15 years researching them.
Here is another link about Evelyn and the FBI. Apparently when she got out of prison Mr. Hoover was still interested in her.

Thanks Minxie - Thanks Christine!
These were very fascinating reads. An interesting tidbit inthe pamphlet distributed by Evelyn's Crime Doesn't Pay Show states that Red Hamilton's body was found and dug up by the FBI in Aug of 35. I thought Mr. Burrough's book stated his grave was never found. I'm going to have to go back and re-read now. My memory is untrustworthy. :D
thanks so much I really enjoyed these...
