Title: Interesting bit on how stars can get paid, or not

This is pretty interesting for those of you who wonder how the big stars get paid, or don't get paid...depending on what deal they strike and how the numbers come down.

Thanks, Karen. That was very interesting. It's also notable that Tracey Jacobs, who is Harrison Ford's agent, was involved in both the Pirates and the Indy deals. It worked out well for Johnny who reportedly made $92 million in large part due to that deal. I simply can't imagine Indy 4 will fail to do extremely well. I remember reading that the trailer was a huge hit. I for sure won't miss it. I'm curious as to how the infamous Hollywood studios accounting enters into the picture. My guess is that the deals with producers/directors/stars include some very specific guidelines to protect their interests. I love that Lucas owns all rights to the franchise.

I hope they have strict guidelines on accounting. Look at the mess with the legal fighting between Peter Jackson and New Line for an example of how not to do it. :(

Thanks Karen--that was interesting. I remember not long ago where it was being reported that this type of deal was going to become more common. I can especially see it for a film like IJ or POTC that costs so much to make. I don't think they'll have any problem recouping their $400 million----look at what the worldwide market did for POTC, not to mention ST---which may have approached the $152 million mark last weekend by the way. FAN is correct---this arrangement sure worked out for Johnny and I don't think HFord will have to worry about a paycheck. Don't you love the way the LA Times tries to put out the "worry" factor---sheesh. Will people pay to see a 65 year old HF?--Heck yeah! Not only that, his sidekick is a hot young star that the younger set will want to see. OK, I've rambled here, sorry. :(

Karen,

Thanks for finding and sharing that link. It was really interesting to read how some contracts are set up.

I have read something similar before and as an accoutant I would want to know exactly how break even on a movie is calculated...there is more than one way to calculate profit depending on what outcome you are seeking.....I would want to make sure the method used did not disadvantage me and was part of the contract negotiations if I was Johnny or Harrison.
