Title: A little bit of Dillinger history from Ohio
wlkingbluepirate - April 9, 2008 07:53 PM (GMT)
Ok, so a lot of you have already seen the chunk of my blog that was my Crown Point meeting Johnny experience, but I've had to change gears a bit. Since I live in the area of John Dillinger's first bank robbery as well as his arrest in September 1933, I decided to do a little investigating to see what I could come up with. It turns out I came up with a lot. So...if you're interested at all in getting more info on that stuff give it a read. I know Mr. Burrough could only put so much into the book which is already rich with information, so this is me expanding it a bit. ;)
Public Enemies - OhioI hope you read. Drop me a line. Say hello.
Peace.

Nice blog, wlkingbluepirate!
If you decide to continue location sleuthing in Ohio, there's a museum in Lima with a little Dillinger exhibit. I'm going down there tomorrow to take DD and friends prom dress shopping, so I did a little advance research.
The Allen County museum has the actual jail cell in which JD was held when his gang busted him out and killed Sheriff Jess Sarber. Now it holds a wax figure of Mr. D. Unfortunately, it's closed on Mondays.
Here are a couple of links:
http://www.geocities.com/outlaws62/sarber2.htmlhttp://www.allencountymuseum.org/s.htmGiven the fact that his gang murdered the town's sheriff in cold blood, you'd think the people in Lima would hold even more animosity towards Dillinger than those in Crown Point (many of whom are contemptuous of him to this day.) Yet the first link above implies the opposite. Perhaps it's because Dillinger expressed regret when he saw Sarber's mortal wounds, reportedly saying to his gang, "Why'd you have to do that?"
The Allen County Sheriff's Office has a tribute page to Sheriff Sarber on its site and a power point slide show, too, with very interesting photos of the Pierpoint, Makley, Clark trial. It's so sad to see Sheriff Sarber's son who took office upon his father's death. During their imprisonment and trial in Lima, it was Sarber's own son's sworn duty to protect the men who had killed his father. :(

Awesome! Thanks for that info Deppaholic. I definitely want to make it up there sometime. It'll be a while though since I'm working crazy hours this week and going on vacation next week.
So, I'm trying to at least update the blog daily even if I don't go into the Dillinger info. I want to at least let you know that I'm always working on it. Plus today's post has a fantastic story of the wonderful morning I had today. :shistle
