Title: My Crown Point, IN Experience

JohnnyFanatic - March 28, 2008 05:25 AM (GMT)
Hi everyone, I was in Crown Point on the 24th and 25th and had an incredible time. I was going to share my report yesterday, but I was still “recovering” from spending two days standing in the cold weather! I'm going to post this in two parts, since it's kind of long...

Part 1:
Here’s how my whole Crown Point experience started: My family attended the PE casting call for extras on March 1st in Chicago. Late last week, my dad received a phone call from the Joan Philo Casting agency saying that he had been chosen to be an extra in the movie! woohoo They told him to be in Crown Point on the 24th and 25th (and they ended up needing him for the 26th too). I was there when my dad received the phone call, and I was so excited for him! As soon as he hung up the phone, I asked him what part they wanted him for, and he said he would be playing an inmate! That’s when I really started to freak out because I knew that Johnny would obviously be in the prison scenes, and I couldn’t believe that my dad would have the chance to be in a scene with him! I begged my dad to take me with him to Crown Point so that I could try to see Johnny (especially since I had stood outside in the cold weather in Columbus for 12 hours and didn’t see Johnny at all, and I wanted to try again at a different location). I managed to get the 24th and 25th off from work, so I was all set!

My dad dropped me off at the barricades across the street from the jail around 5:45am on Monday. The holding area for extras was also right across the street from where I was standing, so my dad and I made plans to meet at the barricades at the end of the day when he would be finished filming. Then it was time for the extremely long wait! It was freezing in the morning…I was so grateful when the sun finally came out later in the day. We were told by security early on that it would most likely be interior shooting only that day. Fans still stuck around by the barricades though, hoping that we would catch glimpses of Johnny going to and from the set. And fortunately, there were plenty of sightings to keep us satisfied throughout the day!

Our first Johnny sighting was around 11:00am. A black SUV pulled up, and everyone started screaming. Johnny came out of the SUV wearing his tan leather jacket and stood in the middle of the street, waving to all of his fans, smiling, and doing his infamous namaste gesture before going inside the jail. I was so overwhelmed at seeing him that I wasn’t able to get a photo of him, which was a shame because it was a nice photo opportunity…but I actually think it’s better in a way just to enjoy the moment and not worry so much about photos! I found out later on from my dad that he and the other extras could hear the screaming outside and immediately thought, “Well, that must mean that Johnny’s here!” :D

Around 1:30, we had our second JD sighting. This time he was wearing a black overcoat and sunglasses. He posed for photos again and smiled and waved before heading off to lunch. He even rolled down the window while the SUV drove away to continue waving at his fans! I did manage to get a photo of him waving this time, but again I was so overwhelmed that I forgot to use the zoom on my camera. :banghead So yeah, the photo didn’t turn out too well, but who cares, it’s still Johnny!! :D

We were then told that JD wouldn’t be back at the set until 6:00…however, he actually arrived back on set at 3:00, which makes sense since the lunch break is only about an hour and a half anyway…I have no idea where that 6:00 time came from! Anyway, we weren’t prepared for him this time since we assumed he would be arriving much later, so when his SUV turned around the corner, a bunch of us were sitting down and we stood up so fast to see him that we almost knocked the barricade over. It was actually pretty funny! This was my favorite sighting so far because this was the closest he had been to me all day, and when he turned around and waved, it looked as if he was waving and smiling right at me! :thud (of course, that’s what we all want to believe, right?) ;)

JohnnyFanatic - March 28, 2008 05:25 AM (GMT)
Part 2:
After the JD sighting at 3:00, he stayed inside the rest of the time filming the movie. Once the sun went down, it started to get cold (and by cold, I mean freezing!) Around 7:45, they announced “That’s a wrap!” Then we waited about another half hour, and security announced that Johnny had left the set and went back to his trailer. More waiting…at this point I was starting to worry about how cold I was because I was actually starting to feel numb, I couldn’t stop shivering, and my hands were so cold and weak that I couldn’t even hold on to my camera. Security finally told us that Johnny would come by in 20 minutes to greet the crowd. We were told he would just walk down the street and wave and pose for photos…then when his SUV pulled up and he started making his way down the line of people, I noticed that he was shaking people’s hands! I literally almost fainted when I saw him doing this…I have always wanted to shake Johnny’s hand, and I couldn’t believe that I was finally going to get my chance! I was almost trembling as he made his way closer to me, which could have been from the cold or maybe just from sheer excitement! When he was right in front of me, I reached out my hand and Johnny took it and clasped it in his and held it the entire time I talked to him!! :thud I told him I love his work and that he’s amazing (and he made eye contact with me the whole time, really focusing and paying attention to what I was saying), and he smiled and said “Bless you, thank you very much” and then moved on to the next person (but he was still holding my hand!! Unless that was me not wanting to let go of his hand!) The skin on Johnny’s hand was so soft and smooth, and of course extremely warm (I hope I didn’t make him too cold because I know my hand was nearly frozen!) I started crying because I was so happy. I heard Johnny comment to the people next to me that he felt bad about how cold we all were, and he actually apologized for keeping us waiting. I thought that was so sweet of him to do that. :) A bunch of people started heading down the line as he moved along so they could watch him greet the rest of the crowd, so I followed them. I was right near his SUV when Johnny stood in front of it and waved to the crowd and then he climbed into the SUV and headed off down the street.

I found my dad a few minutes later, and he gave me a hug when I told him what had happened. I called my mom on our cell phone and said “Johnny Depp held my hand!” and she couldn’t believe it! It was just an amazing day, and it was so worth it standing outside in the cold all day just for those precious seconds with Johnny (he is the only person I would do that for, by the way! I had actually just gotten over a really bad cold, so standing outside all day probably wasn’t the smartest thing for me to do…but like I said, it was so worth it!) :)

My dad and I went to this Italian restaurant called Lucrezia’s afterwards that was located next to the jail. Our waitress told us that Johnny had their Chicken Vesuvio catered to him earlier and that he loved it. So of course I ordered the same meal, and it was delicious. Johnny has great taste when it comes to food!

I went back to the barricades on Tuesday, and this time there were no Johnny sightings during the day. We heard that some people spotted him heading to and from his trailer though. Late that night around 10:30, he arrived to greet the crowd though, again making all of the waiting worth it! There were way more people at the barricades this time (probably because word had gotten out that Johnny had greeted the crowd the night before-plus, we heard that someone called a Valparaiso radio station and said that Johnny would be signing autographs that night. No idea who would have done that, but the security people weren’t too happy about it). As Johnny came by this time, I shook his hand, thanked him, and he made eye contact with me and said “My pleasure.” I saw him get into his SUV again and he leaned out of the car and waved to everyone on all sides of the street before they drove off. I looked around me, and I saw so many people smiling, hugging each other, crying…all reacting from getting to meet Johnny. I had a few tears in my eyes myself because it was incredibly touching to see the effect that Johnny has on people. I think he knows how much it means to people just to take the time to say hello to them. And what makes it even more special is knowing that after a long day of shooting, Johnny is most likely very tired and cold (I heard it was actually colder inside the jail than it was outside!), and he could easily just get into his SUV and drive back to his hotel…the fact that he not only greets his fans, but actually takes the time to shake each person’s (very cold!) hand and make eye contact with them is just remarkable. Seeing Johnny acknowledge his fans like this has been my favorite moment so far during my time of following his career. I have never been so proud to be a fan of his. And he truly deserves every bit of praise and admiration he receives because he is an amazing man. :angel

As for my dad’s experience as an extra, I told my dad to remember every detail about his time on set. He ended up being in two prison scenes with Johnny!! :snoopy He told me so many wonderful tidbits about Johnny…as of right now, I don’t want to reveal anything because I don’t want to get my dad in trouble (sorry for the tease!) It’s just that he was told several times, along with the other extras, not to write about his experience online or reveal anything until after the movie is released. So closer to the release of the movie next year, I will reveal some nice tidbits I learned about Johnny during filming. I will say this though: my dad said he couldn’t be any more impressed with how professional and friendly Johnny was on set. And the escape scene sounds like it’s going to be very intense!

I do have some pictures to share of Johnny signing autographs, but I won’t have them ready until tomorrow at the earliest.

I have two videos from my enounters, one from Columbus where a guy behind us filmed it all, sent us a copy and posted it on Youtube. COLUMBUS (sorry if I posted this before)

The second is here. I forgot what Johnny said to me until I saw the video.
MEETING JOHNNY
"Bless your heart"

All I can tell others who haven't had the opportunity YET is to hang in there and BELIEVE it will happen. And it will.

Congratulations! What a lovely couple of days you've had.

I always knew Johnny was an amazing man, but your story has proved to me that Johnny is even more amazing than I thought. :bow

I'm so happy for you and look forward to hearing about the tidbits your Dad told you when the time is right :claphands

and RIDeppth: I just viewed your video and you know the amazing thing about Johnny is that despite all those hundreds of people surrounding him and telling him how wonderful he is, there is not a hint of arrogance or conceit. I just don't think Johnny knows the meaning of either! Many celebs should take a leaf out of his book

I had to print your story out so I could take it to work for my fellow fanatics (not as gone as I am, but still fans). Then I have stories like this whenever we're in a JD dry spell and I can re-read this stuff and cheer up. Just a little crazy, but it's fun.
