Here are some great set pics of downtown OshKosh, especially the store window displays at the link below. Did I even see that Sweeney has set up shop?---a little scary :ph43r: Thanks to lynnsown----

Cooo-love that silver dress!

And when I saw the barber pole I was hearing Johnny's voice in my head..."how about a shave?"

I'm not sure this is the right thread to bring this up so feel free to move it, Karen. There was a question raised on the Zone as to what the cobblestones (the originals, not the movie replicas) were made of, stone or brick. From the looks of the replicas, they are meant to be the clay brick pavers that were very common at the time in the US, especially outside the wealthy and long-established eastern cities. I did some quick google research and found many references to brick streets all over the country. There were still some in certain residential areas in my Indiana hometown as I was growing up. Many towns have maintained them or recreated them in historic areas. They were often the first type of paving used in developing towns and were less expensive and easier to repair although less durable than the stone cobbles that are common in Europe, Mexico and many other places, including parts of older US cities like, for example, Philadelphia. I found this short blurb from a Chicago company that sells old brick pavers for modern use:

QUOTE
Antique street pavers are solid clay bricks that are heavier and larger than standard common bricks. Most were used to pave the streets of the late 19th and early 20th century. As road paving technology advanced in the 1920s the old brick paved streets were covered by cement or asphault. During major road reconstruction projects, the old pavers are excavated and removed.

edit: I was looking at a good closeup of the PE cobblestones and they do look like replicas of the stone versions, not the brick. Still, they'll pass for either on the screen so it's not a big deal either way.

I just got back from Oshkosh. I wanted to check it out before tomorrow and see where the road closures were, etc. I did take pics, but I don't have time to post them now, as I'm on my way out the door again.

There are workers still laying down the cobblestone and alot of activity in the downtown area. Workers still doing quite a bit of painting on the storefronts. Props have been installed inside the windowfronts--it looks really cool. The streecar is parked out on it's "track" in front of the Masonic Temple, where workers were doing something on the inside. Workers in the cablecar area were laying on the street "greying out" the white paint to indicate turning lanes, etc. There were probably a couple hundred people milling around the downtown area and checking it all out. Most agreed, the Main Street looks better with the storefront overlays than it did before. I'll post pictures later.

I do plan on going down there tomorrow afternoon, although being the first day of filming in the area, I expect it will be very crowded.

ETA: the link that Donna posted has many of the same pics I took today, so prorbably no need to repost.

FAN-thanks for the research on the cobble stones---interesting isn't it? It will be interesting to see the look in the film when it's finished.

shopgirl-thanks for your update---good luck tomorrow! From what I've read, the Masonic Temple looks to be a place of action tomorrow ;)

This is incredibly interesting. Those pictures are stunning. I love the style of the times....it's beautiful. I'm so grateful we're getting such an up-close glimpse of the preparation and filming. It's very exciting, even for those of us not close enough to the action to see it in person. Thanks to all those who are sharing their awesome images with us!!

WOW Fan! That's such great info about the pavers and the street replacements!! Thanks for going to so much trouble to tell us about it!!

Shopgirl1! Thanks for the updates, I read on Rod's blog that there was a huge green screen going up in front of the Masonic Lodge! I can't wait to hear what they use that for! You are so great for sharing all of these goodies with us! I've heard from a couple of people that screening will be all day tomorrow! And that I think there's a meet and greet scheduled.

Can't wait for tomorrow's news! Many thanks!! We live through you all who are nice enough to share with us!

Can't wait for tomorrow's news!  Many thanks!!  We live through you all who are nice enough to share with us!

I think we all feel that way, which is what makes JDR such a special site. I did go to Oshkosh today for a little while in the afternoon. They were filming a car scene in front of the Masonic Temple, which is across the street from the green screen that went up since yesterday (I do have pictures of that). I watched as they set the scene up, then we heard "gunshots" and the gangsters came down the street in the getaway (I presume) car.

People were calling out to Johnny and he turned and gave a kind of shy wave. Then, in mid-afternoon there was a break (I was told it was for lunch) and all the extras were transported over to a large area, where I saw a catering truck. I wish I could have gotten better pictures, but when I saw him, I was too excited to be dealing with a camera, too. At the end, I got a real good look when his car drove right past me and he was in the back seat. :snoopy I'm going to try to go back again, later in the week.

A friend I was with said she had a friend who was working security and she mentioned this afternoon something about a meet and greet, so that must be true Karen.

Here's the link to my pics from today. You can make them bigger by clicking on "all sizes". ETA the link! http://www.flickr.com/photos/87125579@N00/

I didn't get there today, but here's a link to some video footage taken by the Oshkosh Northwestern, the newspaper. There's a couple of loops; Johnny meeting his fans at the end of yesterday's filming and another one showing the scene they filmed yesterday that I saw.

I have to laugh at the shock here that Johnny would stop to meet his fans. I told my husband...that's what makes him so special! That he does do that. Hoping to take a personal day tomorrow and go back.

I just wanted to share an absolutely amazing experience with this amazing man.

Last night, they actually had a meet and greet around 7:30ish. All I can say is WOW! Johnny really seems to be such a sincere and genuine individual. I feel so grateful to have finally met a man that I admire so dearly. When I met Johnny, he shook my hand in both of his, looked in my eyes, and when I said what a pleasure it was to meet him, he said, "the pleasure is all mine". What a night! Here are a few pictures that I took this past Saturday on the set and from tonight...Enjoy!

We have to be the luckiest fans in the whole wide world ~ 1. to have someone of Johnny's degree to come out and take so much time to meet and greet his fans so often and so regular. I know of no other actor to do that.

and 2nd. to have all of you who are able to meet and greet Johnny share your whole experience with those of us who can't make it to the filming. Someone from England said on Rod's blog that she doesn't remember so much detail of Johnny and the filming of his movie getting so much attention. I have to agree with her, but maybe that's because he films so little in the U.S. and few open sets.

All of you who are sharing your stories, pictures, and clips it is so appreciated. Although we may be jealousy green, and want to be where you are at more than anything, it's so terrific that we can be there through your stories and your eyes.

Keep the stories, pics, and clips coming!! :snoopy
