At so many points in their "spree" these guys had more than enough money for them to leave the country and start a new life elsewhere.
What do you think stopped them from leaving?

Excellent question and after the near death surgical experience I cannot figure out why Dillinger did not leave. Reasons: wanted to wait for Billie, wanted to die in the U.S. so his family could make his final arrangements, fear of the unknown or lack of funds. I wonder if Mr. Burroughs could give his thoughts sometime. This one has me stumped. Anne r

I agree, excellent question. I agree with Anne and also, still wanting to stay close to their "roots." What other life style did they know? I also think they would run through their money very quickly and then maybe felt like committing crimes in another country, not knowing their system, might be too risky? Just guesses, but I also agree with Anne that maybe Dillinger was hoping to reunite with Billie at some point.....Yes, Brian B.---any insights?

I kept asking myself this one over and over. I was thinking maybe their families or Billie (for Dillinger). They never seemed to be able to plan ahead. They sort of shot from the hip ( I know bad pun, not intended) as far as long range plans went.

Bryan Burrough is a very kind and generous man, I fired off an email about this and got his response. So ask and ye shall receive!
From PE author Bryan Burrough today:

Why not leave the country? I think he had no idea how to -- how to do it, how to live somewhere else. Remember, this was a farm kid who'd been in prison. The only time he ever got away from home was Boston in The Navy. Besides, I think he secretly liked being a celebrity. No one ever believes they're gonna caught till they get caught, you know. |
Thanks Bryan! :thanks

Oh my gosh Karen, this is just driving me crazy as I read.  I keep thinking they can change the outcome.
Thanks so much Mr. Burroughs for you answer. I keep having to remind myself to read with an understanding of the mindset and worldview of the time.

I wonder if they were thinking that what they had really wasn't enough. Just one more time. Wasn't that mentioned in the book? When is enough ever really enough? (The more you have, the more you want.)
