Description: 3/10 JDR member reports in (pg 2)

Found on this dance forum:
http://www.windyhop.org/forum/default.aspx?m=244016&f=19&p=1I got the flier, and since I had to type all the info out for our newsletter, I thought I'd paste it here to save someone else the trouble of typing it again:
The Universal feature film "Public Enemies" directed by Michael Mann, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale is searching for dancers to work as paid non-speaking extras. They will be shooting in the Chicago area this spring and need people who have experience in 1930s dance styles (two-step, ballroom) or the ability to pick up specific choreography quickly. Joan Philo Casting (www.joanphilocasting.com) has contacted us to help get the word out about their casting call this coming Thursday at Fizz.
If selected to be in the film, you must:
be available for a two-night shoot (tentatively scheduled for May 13 and 14), plus one additional day for rehearsal and one additional day for wardrobe fitting. (FYI, night shoots begin sometime in the afternoon and go until early the next morning. They are searching for local area dancers, as film dates can change quickly, and they need to make sure they can get dancers to the set quickly.)
be willing to let the hair department cut your hair as needed before the shoot date. (Men keep your hair long; Ladies, this will be a short 1930's style hairdo)
Because period wardrobe is involved, men must be no taller than 6'1. Women must be no taller than 5'8" and no larger than a size 12.
If you can dance and are willing to make this commitment, attend the casting call at Fizz on Thursday, March 6th to meet Joan and Clare.
If possible, dress and style your hair as if attending an upscale dance club in the 1930s. Look sharp and have fun with it! Even if you can't find a 1930s outfit, you should still come out and be seen!
Thursday, March 6th, 2008
7 - 10pm (anytime during these hours)

Please bring a recent color photograph and a pen with you. You will fill out a registration card.

Oh my! Does this mean we'll see Johnny Dillinger dancing?-lol Of course, they could be background dancers..... thanks for finding that Karen. It's amazing how many extras will be in this film. I know I read somewhere there was a casting call for bank tellers as well.(Might have been here at JDR---I can't keep them all straight anymore-lol)

Swing dancers!! Cool, I would think they probably be for in the background too, but I would think if it would be called upon for Johnny to do, he'd learn it and do it well!!

Gosh I hope you are right MerryK! He struggled with the little bit of "dancing" in Chocolat and they "cheated" in the pie shop dancing scene in Sweeney. ;)
Dillinger danced. I hope Johnny "hustles" it up and learns something simple. :crossfingers

I could handle Dillinger/Johnny doing a nice slow cheek to cheek dance
~ Mary Kay :D

Yup, they had questions on the questionnaire card yesterday at the casting call asking if you were a dancer, if you knew any 1930's dances and which style? Also, could you learn a two-step quickly and if you could work night work on May 13th and 14th. I'm a dancer (mostly ballet), but not in 1930's style.
Thanks for the info.
Holly woohoo

Well, a co-worker and I are going to the Thursday night casting call for dancers. I've checked out some videos and as long as I don't have to jitterbug, I'll be okay. I also checked out 1930's hairstyles and have some better ideas than on Saturday. That was such a rush job.
I'm getting excited.... :snoopy

I'm really far behind in reading PUBLIC ENEMIES, but smiled to myself when I read the following: He couldn't really dance but reluctantly allowed Billie to show him a step or two.
Johnny won't have to pretend to not know how to dance! LOL Why does him fumbling around on the dance floor sound so much sexier than going out and really knowing how to dance? :thud
Holly, have you heard anything back on your casting call?
HeidiGrant40 - March 9, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
The book said that Dillinger liked dancing the carioca. I've never heard of that one.

Ooo, thanks for finding that link Donna. Now I am giggling just picturing Johnnys expression if he should see that clip and if it mentions the dance in the script.

Been trying to get my house in order as a DeppSistah is visiting while the Columbus WI filming is underway... Didn't get a chance to post my "experience" at the Swing Dance casting call last week. So here it is.
A Night at the Fizz
Sometimes opportunities pop up when least expected and you have to decide whether to take advantage of it or not. When I heard that there would be an extras casting call for the movie, “Public Enemies” in Chicago last week, I knew I had to try out. A few days later the news of a second casting call for swing dancers was announced. It was a bit of a daunting idea, but I decided to make the trip into Chicago on a Thursday night. As the days came closer to the date, I ran into a few hurdles, one of which was transportation. On the verge of giving it a miss, a friend encouraged me to stay the course. The next day I discovered a co-worker was interested in going to the casting call as well which solved the problem and made it all the more enjoyable.
The casting announcement encouraged participants to “get into the mood” and dress according to the period. I found a hairdresser who did my hair in fingerwaves and I put together a wardrobe of sorts and practiced my dancing. Thursday night we headed down to Chicago and finally found the Fizz Bar and Grill on Lincoln Ave, not far from the famous Biograph Cinema where John Dillinger was gunned down. The place was small and people had already begun to line up in various types of dress from jeans and t-shirts to period costume. Linda and I were about the only ones who had gone so far as to do the 1930’s hair however. While we waited, we completed the information cards and stapled our headshots to them.
Soon we were allowed upstairs to a room with a dance floor. More people were crowded around the room waiting. Soon the casting company director, Joan Philo and her assistant, Clare, stood up and announced the procedures for the auditions: Turn in the card and photo, pin a sign with your name on your chest, have a picture taken (no smiling please), then wait in another line until it is your turn in front of the camera. Yep, they were filming the dancing to provide to the movie’s director, Michael Mann. He would make the final determination of about 200 people to be in the film.
While in line we chatted with several other people, mostly couples. Keep in mind swing dance is a couple’s dance, however some did not have partners, Linda and I being two. There were also many professional dancers and members of swing dance clubs who were rather intimidating, but we were determined to hang in there and give it our best shot. Soon it was our turn. There were 4 areas marked on the floor and as the cameras rolled, you were to move from mark to mark - the 3rd mark was directly in front of the camera. Summoning up our courage, we walked to the dance floor. The music was rather slow, more for couples dancing, but I made the most of it, pretending someone was swinging me under “his” arm, etc.
After we finished we quickly got our things and headed for the downstairs bar and chatted for a little while, then made our way home. In the car we chatted about a lot of things, including her frustration with her home life and not having time for herself. Her culture being a bit different (she is from Eastern Europe), she was almost giddy about the evening. It was one of those moments when you don’t know if you will be ridiculed or not, but I went ahead and mentioned that I too had been venturing into new avenues, different activities, taking advantage of opportunities as they presented themselves – all because of Johnny’s influence. I waited a moment... and she surprised me by agreeing and we spent the rest of the trip home talking about him and Vanessa (surprised as I had spoken to her previously about Johnny and Vanessa and she spoke rather negatively about them).
Anyway, it was an interesting evening and even though it may not come to anything, at least we can say we tried our best, and we had fun. Okay, Michael, did we make the cut?

I'm confused. First, the book says he couldn't really dance but reluctantly allowed Billie to show him a step or two. But then it says he liked to dance the Carioca? Dillinger must have been a great learner.

Yup that's what it says, I checked. Maybe he liked one dance more than another?

Maybe he liked dancing forehead to forehead better than cheek to cheek?
