Title: Crooked Tree? A project for Johnny??
Karen - February 26, 2008 11:30 PM (GMT)
I guess time will tell once again...hmmm This is on E!Online, here's the link and it's worth popping over
here to have a look-see just for the picture!
Don't tell anyone. It's not a done deal yet, but I'm told the man who makes our hearts beat fast, aka Johnny Depp, is very close to signing on to an adaptation of Robert C. Wilson's gripping novel Crooked Tree.
The book has been described as Jaws meets The Exorcist. And that's accurate, if you also throw in Poltergeist. Yes, it's a dreamy, terrifying blend. Bears attack. A woman is possessed. Native American folklore is key. The book is riveting, I tell you.
Depp is a big fan of the book, a source tells E! Online, and he would be playing Axel Michelson, the husband of the woman who becomes possessed. Sounds good to me, and he'd better sign up already—Jeff Daniels, a close friend of the author, is also in the mix.
What do you think? Sound like a good fit for Johnny? Or is it time he does something, like, light 'n' fluffy? Sound off in the Comments.

Sounds good, if it's after Dillinger and Shantaram. ;)

I like the sound of that, but he's already "linked" to so many projects.
PE is about to begin filming.
We don't know for certain, but The Imaginarium sounds likely enough as it would take very little time and could conceivably be filmed during a lull in shooting on PE.
I'm guessing that either Shantaram or Rum Diary would be next with the other following.
IMDB has had him linked to Sin City 2/3 for some time, although they still list his involvement as "rumored".
Plus we know Infinitum Nihil has the rights to Dark Shadows & since it's a love of his from childhood I'm guessing/hoping he wants to begin that in the next couple of years.
Do I have the pending projects about right? And wouldn't that keep him busy through the end of '09 at the very least, what with breaks and publicity tours? Don't most large shoots average 75-90 days on principal photography?

As I said, this is a time will tell situation, and we have seen projects such as Public Enemies and Sweeney Todd jump to the top of the "list" ahead of other reported projects such as The Ginger Man.
So, all things considered? It's definately a "time will tell" report.

True, I know they must always be taken with a grain of salt. It does sound, though, like something that would appeal to him.
Am I right in thinking that he will probably work on Shantaram as soon as possible (taking into consideration the monsoon season), since he was about to begin filming on that when the writer's strike started?
And you're right...I forgot Ginger Man and omitted it.
Gee - he makes me feel like a lazy slug!

Sounds like an interesting project if it ever comes to pass.
That picture with the article, on the other hand, WHEW!!!

I know I've seen this picture before but WHEW!!!

Another interesting *possible* project. It's why I admire the guy so much---look at the wide array of roles he's "attached" to so far-----

Yikes!
He's already played an "Axel"---what are the odds of that happening again? :P
Well, I guess anything's possible, but I'd be just as happy if he waited a good while before he makes another horror film!

So well I don't particularely like movies like the Exorcist or Poltergeist...you know the classic horror films are just a bit too much for me at times! *lol*
But still I think that this project sounds interesting and if Johnny would take it up after PE AND Shantaram I'd definitely be okay with it. :)

here is some info about it from amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Crooked-Tree-Robert-...04108579&sr=8-1it seems pretty freaky! Sounds like a good read though!

I'd like to see him stretch himself in a totally different direction: comedy. Something that could draw on his physical comedy genius and the gentle Edward side of his personality. It would obviously take a really special script, director etc. But he has the lost soul quality, the vulnerability, and that crooked smile to be a new Chaplin. How bout Johnny? Enough darkness. ;) :ciggy

I've read this book, and it is great! I would really like to see this one happen....especially if it means Johnny will be coming to Michigan!!!

Thanks for the heads up about the book Joanie, it reminds me a bit of how I felt about Swecret Window. Not too sure until I saw the movie, then I loved it! ;)

Out of curiosity, I checked this book out of the library today.
The author doesn't make horror fans wait long--the gore starts on page six. I think I'll wait a while to finish it---I'm sure it's a good story, but Public Enemies has bloody parts, too, and I've about maxed out on blood for the time being.
(But if it brings Johnny to Michigan, well, then I'm all for it! :) )

I've got the book on order at the library...it should be in early next week. I can't wait! It's been a looong time since I've read anything in the horror genre. But anything for Johnny!

The Native American element might be of particular interest.
I don't think the similarity in the name of the character to Axel from Arizona Dream really needs to be a problem since the characters themselves are different from each other.

Another Axel. Why not. I'm up for everything and anything he wants to do. Que sera.
Thanks, Karen.

I think Johnny has comic genius lurking inside him too.
We've seen the glow from it........
laugh/cry--two sides of the same coin.
As I've said repeatedly I'm up for whatever comes our way. Genre be damned. I don't put unhatched chickens in my basket, but hearing any rumor of a film with Johnny makes me all tingly. :snoopy
Keep on Truckin', Depp dude! :thumbsup
