Title: From Hell question
Amber - February 18, 2008 02:13 AM (GMT)
I just watched From Hell tonight. Can someone tell me the reason behind the inspectors death at the end.?

I'm with you on this Amber. I would like to know also because the real Inspector Abberline did not die until he was much older. Why did they have him die at the end of the movie?

From Hell is a work of fiction drawn from historical people and happenings. No one knows who the ripper was to this day. The story was loosely based on the Allan Miller graphic novel by the same name. When authors fictionalize history they change facts as they please.
The real Inspector Abberline's first wife died of TB and he remained married to his second wife until his death at 86.

Interesting answer Karen!
I always thought that if he were to go see the girl, the cult would go after her. So he couldn't go after her. The only solution, being to wallow away with broken heart.

I've been thinking about that movie a lot lately. It was so well done, although I'd be happy with less graphic violence. I agree with you, Depputante. I think he died so that she and her child could live in peace.

I thought he died because he loved the last one murdered (Mary I think her name was - I am bad with names) and that he also lost his wife earlier. In other words he was unlucky in love. I always cry at the end of that movie and I thought it was very well done. Certainly a lot better than other movies or series. Whatever,
I thought he was very good in this movie - it is one of my favourites.
I am still trying to get a copy of "The Ninth Gate" - please don't mention e-bay I don't like using it.
Hope he gets an Oscar for Sweeney Todd

In the movie, Mary didn't die. The hooker from Brussels? France? was sleeping in Mary's room. She died, they made a big deal about Abberline looking at the straight hair, Mary had curly, wavy hair.
Mary wrote the letter to Abberline telling him where she and child would be waiting for him.
As far as The Ninth Gate, you might try Amazon.com as I know you aren't located here in the states where it's readily available.

I always thought that the hair he looked at at the last murder scene was brown and not red like Mary's so he knew it couldn't have been Mary who was murdered. And in the last scene when he is found dead, he is much older - lots of grey in the beard and hair - so I assumed it was a long time after Mary left with the baby. Maybe a combination of old age, broken heart and drugs.
