I think Jess, as unlikable as Hornby has written her, is the catalyst. Jess makes things happen. What about the others, how do they make the story happen and inevitably come to it's ending?

Hmmmmmmmmmm Thats a tough one. Yes.. I would definitely have to agree about that with Jess. I'm thinking that each one of them is kind of looking to the other as to why they should or should not jump. Not that they are saying.. talk me out of it.. but that if maybe one of them changes their mind that it could maybe be different for their own self. That they have each latched on to one another that somehow they may actually find a way out of their predicament. In a way .. it is like they all are a diversion from what is actually weighing on their minds and soul and for the meantime.. they dont have to think about what they each feel will be the inevitable.

I think maybe they are all in their own way wanting their lives to be validated, and are seeking the forgiveness they could not give themselves for their mistakes. Each of them gets a jolt from the others-to shake them out of the place they had got themselves stuck to emotionally.

I'm sorry to leave the question of balance unanswered. I don't think they do balance one another. I think they have so much in common emotionally, and each of them is very unbalanced, LOL.
