The Arthurian legend as retold in the American Old West, with all of its great symbolism, magic and spirit of adventure. The Knights of the Round Table are all gunslingers bound by a code of honor to protect the weak and defend the innocent until they are undone from within by their own moral corruption. In this tale, Caliber itself is a tattooed six-gun, given to Arthur by the Indians and imbued with supernatural power. The secret of the gun is that it is never loaded with bullets, but when a man with Justice on his side is holding it, it can fire. When it does, it fires Thunder itself and never misses.

Genre: Mythical Western; Fantasy
Comic Book Release: May 2008

I hope no one was expecting a "regular" cowboy! user posted image

Not a regular cowboy is for sure! Interesting NEW idea they've got there.
I'm not sure if I've go this idea right or not.

So Arthur is the name of the cowboy.
Indians gave Arthur a gun named Calibur.
Calibur, the gun, has tattoos, and it shoots only as necessary at amoral people?

Is this correct interpretation???

The boys are going Graphic Novels on us.

Karen - February 12, 2008 06:15 PM (GMT)
Depp and IN already purchased the rights to graphic novel series REX MUNDI and now his friend and IN officer Sam Sarkar is writing this graphic novel, CALIBER.

Yup....that's it alright! ;)

Wow the cover looks so cool! =0
What a great idea! I love myths and fantasy!

Karen - February 12, 2008 06:41 PM (GMT)
Hmmmm let me see...the book is published this May.....wonder what our Spring read will be? :P

Depputante - February 12, 2008 06:52 PM (GMT)
I imagine this will be better than Rex. I found the Rex Mundi story a bit difficult, a little too deep in the Grail quest for my knowledge base. Corrupt Knights of the Round Table sounds more eaily pallitable. :P Maybe even Funny, in a black humor sort of way. Cowboy kills Crooked politicians. :thumbsup What stops cowboy from pointing gun at everyone? Just to check, eh? :shistle

Hesitating, but I guess I'll be purchasing a Graphic Novel in the near future too.
I find them kind of expensive though. One must really stop and look at the graphic flowers during the read. I sure hope our Cowboy resembles someone I know and love! :crossfingers

I know practically nothing about this area, so here's a little overview of the myth. It's just the very tip of an Iceberg me thinks.

Rose Sparrow - February 12, 2008 08:12 PM (GMT)
Definitely not your every day wrangler there!
What a great idea for a story though! woohoo
Rex was the first graphic novel I ever read and surprisingly, I really enjoyed it!
This one looks to be just as interesting!

Here's another article from last July that not only mentions "Caliber" but that IN already has their hands on it. Not surprising...

LONDON -- U.K.-based sales, production and finance house Intandem, listed here on the Alternative Investment Market, is embarking on a corporate strategy lifted straight out the pages of a comic book.

Radical's slate also includes Sam Sarkar's comic creation "Caliber," which is being produced with Infinitum Nihil, Terrance Chang and John Woo for Lionrock Prods., with Woo attached to direct.

Gosh I love REX MUNDI and really enjoy reading the series. I can't wait to read the 4th book in the series, CROWN AND SWORD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159307824...ASIN=1593078242

I just love this stuff. lol But we all have differing interests. I'm glad that Johnny's attracted to so many different subjects and themes. ;)

Just a minute. The Radical site listing is under COMICS, not BOOKS.
The price also looks to be US $1.00 . Yes?

Do we have confirmation it's going to become a Graphic Novel?

Thanks for the info. Karen---looks like an other GNovel purchase in my future. I have to admit I enjoyed Rex Mundi too, more than I thought I would. This Caliber tale looks very interesting, too.

I had the latest Rex Mundi on order with Amazon last fall, but then they emailed and said the delivery was delayed until March of this year, so I cancelled my order. Looks like I need to check back on this one.......So Caliber may be in our future discussion then? SHould I order that one first?

I forgot to add---both these main characters, in REX and CALIBER sure share a Johnny resemblance to me.........I agree, maybe this is Johnny's "cowboy" role----that would be something. :)

It seems that as with Rex Mundi, individual comic books are published singularly, for about $4 - $6, they are published sequentially and when there is a certain number then they usually are published together as a graphic novel. Or so I understand. I saw the $1 price and thought that to be an arbitrary price to hold the price spot on the art work for the cover.

Graphic novel definition from Wikipedia:

The evolving term graphic novel is not strictly defined, and is sometimes used, controversially, to imply subjective distinctions in artistic quality between graphic novels and other kinds of comics. It suggests a story that has a beginning, middle and end, as opposed to an ongoing series with continuing characters; one that is outside the genres commonly associated with comic books, and that deals with more mature themes. It is sometimes applied to works that fit this description even though they are serialized in traditional comic book format. The term is commonly used to disassociate works from the juvenile or humorous connotations of the terms comics and comic book, implying that the work is more serious, mature, or literary than traditional comics.

I thought the same thing Donna when I looked at the cover of Calibur. So I hope that Johnny does play this cowboy. I'm looking forward to it. It sounds exciting.

I just want to add to this topic what Arvid Nelson said in a topic here at JDR.

captainjacksparrow -- thanks for tracking down the individual issues. I know it's not easy, but we really do depend on sales of the "singles" to subsidize the collected volumes. Comics are in a transitional period right now, away from single issues to collected volumes. It's hard for the likes of me, because I can't afford the costs of producing and writing 160+ pages all at once, but fewer and fewer people are reading single issues.

I will be buying the indivudual copies on this series as well.

Karen - February 13, 2008 03:17 AM (GMT)
Thanks for reminding us about what Arvid said regarding the individual issues.
