What was Anna thinking, taking this prisoner into her home?

Balashov has a long conservation with Mutz describing the nature of his relationship with his estranged wife. Balashov is aware that the Red army is advancing to Yazyk. It is well known that Matula intends to fight the Red army. Balashov implores Mutz to protect Anna and Alyosha when the Red army wages battle against the Legion. Anna takes Samarin home with her because she is bored and desires male company. She was attracted to him during his testimony-Mutz is sent to find the Red army-so she has no one who questions her motives and Matula agrees to let Anna have custody of Samarin with the agreement she will be shot if he escapes. Balashov stills cares for Anna and realises that Mutz cares for her too.

What WAS Anna thinking? Boredom makes her brain shut off?

Obviously she was attracted to Samarin and had no reason not to trust that what he was saying was true--except for the fact that was an escaped convict. Hmmmm.....

She wasn't thinking with her head, for sure. A common occurence.

Deppraved-I agree with you and what is cool is that we often make that statement about men but Meek has shown that women are guilty of this behavior also. My favorite character is still Balsahov and Anna is second.

Well said ladies, Anna had sex on the mind when she saw Samarin and I think she was intrigued that he was a convict, added to the excitement for her. Also, do you think if Mutz had still been there, that he would have allowed Samarin to go to Anna's? I think he had suspicions of Samarin before he left. I agree with everything else said above----nice job!

No Mutz would have not allowed and he would have not allowed Anna to accept the terms that Matula demanded for Samarin's release to Anna-posssibly another reason Balashov requested "protection "for Anna to save her from her unwise decisions when it came to men and her physical needs. Remember she promised Balashov on page 225 that she would see other men. Anne r
