Matula asks Mutz why he's "such a hopeless failure?" Was it anti-Semitism that caused Matula's to despise Mutz or something more, something else?

I think some had to be his intense anti-semitism, but Matula was so bad and Mutz was an "everyman" just wanting to go home.....hmmm

Yes, I think there was some anti-Semitism there. I also think that Matula had to come up with his list of reasons why Mutz was so worthless because Matula himself had been involved in the massacre and questionable decisions. I think Mutz was a threat to Matula because Mutz had the well-being of his men in mind, while Matula only had his own personal well-being in mind. Goes along with the megalomaniac description of Matula, too.

Mutz did not participate but witnessed Matula's slaughter of the unarmed Red prisoners-and he also saved Matula's life. Mutz is basically a good man of Jewish origin who is not particularly religious. The members of the Legion respect Mutz but withhold their complete trust due to anti-Semitism. The comment about the horses and the murder of the Shaman was an example of how Matula belittled Mutz to undermine his leadership capabilities. Matula further resented Mutz because he had questions regarding the lack of an edit to return to their homeland. Matula's plan was to orchestrate Mutz's murder in the near future. Mutz was watching his back and was planning to remove Matula from command and assist the Legion in their quest to return home. Anne r

In Matula's sick, twisted, rascist, misogynistic mind, Mutz really was worthless and an enemy. He used all the mistakes Mutz was responsible for to rationalise his plan to turn his troops against Mutz and eliminate the one man who saw him for what he really was, and who could foil his plans for complete power in Yasyk.
