Samarin

I could see--

Anna- Rachel Weisz

Balashov - if not JD, then Billy Crudup

I need time to really think about the others--but of course there are many talented and deserving actors whom I wouldn't think of that if you mentioned them I would agree.

Interesting thought about Rachel Weisz for Anna!

I'd like to see Johnny take on Balashov.

That leaves Anna, Samarin, Matula and Mutz for me to think about.. hmmm

maybe Paul Giamatti as Mutz?

Still thinking.....

I just don't see Anna going for a guy who looks like Giamatti. Mutz is supposed to be attractive enought to want to have a roll in the hay.

Maybe Sean Penn? He isn't handsome, but can be attractive.

What about Barry Pepper? he is very underrated, I think.

Mutz-Paul Giamatti-his charm would overcome his looks-and he would show the quiet desparation but honor that is implied by the character in the book.

Samarin-Phillip Seymour Hoffman-he is a great villin-and could "appear" to be nice in order to manipulate others

Balashov-Johnny Depp-I just think character is the most challenging due to changes he undergoes from solider to castrate to hero

Matula-Johnny Depp-I would like to see him play this part also-remember Before Night Falls he played two parts-make up could change looks and the screen play would alter the age range

Anna-this is a hard selection but Anne Hathaway for some reason apeals to me not sure about spelling.

Shaman-small part but Robin Williams- he can act when he wants to

How about Adrien Brody as Matula? He's young, and good at being a cad. He can be sexual and cold as ice!

He's a terrific actor.

I think we need to cast all these parts a bit younger.

Robin Williams would make a terrific Shaman!

I wouldn't mind seeing him play all three parts

I think that as long as the main actors stay within a range of ages with each other, then casting a bit older works ..as Johnny, while he looks like he is in his late 30s is older than the characters are supposed to be, I think.... LOL

I'd love to see Edward Norton play Samarin...he plays manipulative and charming really well.. lol

Still not too sure about Anna....

OK...how about Maggy Gyllenhaal?????

I could go with Edward Norton as a choice for Samarin. I know Anna is hard to cast.

I like the Rachel Weisz choice for Anna, interesting. I think Kate Winslet could pull it off as well. I could see Adrien Brody as Mutz, still voting for Johnny as Samarin. Matula could be Ed Norton but I don't think the part would be big enough. Billy Cruddup is an excellent choice, could see him as Balashov. I also like Jame Cveziel(don't think I spelled that right, the actor in Count of Monte Cristo and The Passion of Christ), would make a good Balashov, too. I like the choices that the rest have posed above.

Edward Norton did come to my mind for a role, and Natalie Portman could sink her teeth into Anna. Maybe a tad too young, but she can play older.

Yes Natalie P. would be a good choice-and she looks older anyway-by her demanor and dress style-and Norton is a good choice for Samarin but I still would like to see PS Hoffman and JD on the screen together the scenes would sizzle especially the cunning that Samarin exhibits in the forest scene when he meets Balashov-fantasy casting is fun-Anne r

Oh Natalie Portman is a good thought for Anna too...so manu choices!

Wonder who Alyosha could be played by?

We've sure come up with some good casting ideas!!!

Is Freddie Highmore to old for Alyosha? If not he would be excellent especially in the bathing scene with Anna and with Samarin on the train. Anne r

I like Freddie Highmore, but would hope for someone else just because he's done so many films with Johnny now, however, I don't know who that would be. Freddie could portray the innocenc of Alyosha that's for sure.

I wouldn't mind PSHoffman as Balashov, sorry ladies, I'm still pushing for Johnny as Samarin!

I could support JD for Samarin-I just hope that a screenplay is developed and we actually get a movie in a few years!! Anne r
