Omigosh.. I am going to cry .. a heart of gold.. such a good man! You know it's one thing to donate money.. but to have his Capt Jack outfit brought in and to sit and read to the children.. taking time out of his busy schedule.. another reason to love this man
....deep sigh~ Mary Kay

Further proof he's a mensch.
FANtasticJD - January 15, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
I wonder if this was really all his own money or if he was presenting the proceeds from the premiere's benefit fundraising. I'd be kind of surprised if he waited this long to make a personal donation -but it's possible. The bit about dressing up as CJS to visit the children is true, though.
click here for article with photoThanks to Theresa (I think it was) on the Zone for finding the article/photo
Karen - January 15, 2008 02:03 AM (GMT)
I wondered about that as well, since the premiere was benefitting GOSH, but I wonder if accounting would have been ready by then to cut a check? Ususally these charity events take a few weeks for the donations to sort out and finalize.
He's such a sweetie!

Thanks so much for this lovely article/pic and the link to the internet site. Johnny makes his presence felt around the world for young children and as many of you said, this piece has me tearing up.

Well, here's another report about Johnny giving £1 million of his own money to GOSH. It goes on to say that Disney will contribute £10 million to GOSH as part of a capital fundraising campaign for the hospital. I like how Disney is being sure to keep close to Johnny - and how it's all benefiting such a worthwhile organization.

Johnny Depp's £1m gift for Great Ormond Street, the hospital that saved his daughter's life By RICHARD SIMPSON -
Johnny Depp secretly visited Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday to donate £1 million of his own money to thank staff for saving his daughter's life.
He arrived unexpectedly at the London children's hospital where eight-year-old Lily-Rose was treated last year when her kidneys failed.
Last week he invited five Great Ormond Street doctors and nurses to the party for the London premiere of his film Sweeney Todd.
And on November 29, unknown to the public, Depp spent four hours at the hospital telling bedtime stories to patients dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow after having his Pirates Of The Caribbean costume flown over from Los Angeles.
In March last year, Lily-Rose spent nine days at Great Ormond Street after E.coli poisoning led to the failure of her kidneys.
She is said to have contracted the bug while staying with Depp, 43, and her mother Vanessa Paradis, 34, in a rented mansion in Richmond, Surrey, while he filmed Sweeney Todd.
Filming at Pinewood in Buckinghamshire had to be halted as her conditioned worsened so much it was feared she might not live.
Depp, who was yesterday named best actor in a musical at the Golden Globes for his role in Sweeney Todd, later said of the scare: "It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell.
"But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital."
Disney, which made the Pirates Of The Caribbean films, will also today donate £10million to Great Ormond Street, which needs to raise £170million in five years to re-develop two-thirds of the hospital site. |

Disney licenses the rights to use "Peter Pan" I believe. They don't own it, but have some sort of business agreement with GOSH and the copyright I think they've supported GOSH for a long time now. I am still amazed at the parallel universe we have with Depp playing J.M. Barrie the creator of Peter Pan, then him so involved with Disney through Capt Jack. Disney's been instrumental in keeping the Peter Pan stories alive for generations now. Just think, you can ride POTC and then wander over to the Peter Pan ride and keep that Depp/Barrie connection going. lol

One thing is certain, Johnny is a very kind and generous man.
One thing bothers me. I can't help but wonder though, who leaked this last story and why? Not Johnny, that's for sure. He's too humble. I don't much like that the article says that he "secretly" visited the hospital and then someone writes about it.
If he went in quietly and made his donation then that means he wanted his donation to be made without this sort of 'hoopla".

Oh gosh I think there's not even any use to get rid of my tears since I start crying over and over again. Johnny's just fantastic. He's simply the best. And all he says and does shows over and over again what a great person he is and what a heart of gold he has. There's not enough words to describe how much I - and most certainly all of you - love him for who he is.

If you stay for the end credits of Sweeney, they thank the doctors and staff of the Renal Ward at the hospital.
I bet when he was photographed end of November shopping for toys, it was for his visit to the hospital.

Once again, our Johnny has SHOWN us how to be a good person, not just with words or loud PR opportunities. (take that with you A and B and a lot of others..) He just does it in his own way. The Capt Jack Sparrow visit was pure, unadulterated Johnny.
He has earned his angel wings again.
Thank you Johnny for your inspiration.

I'm sure his natural humility means he doesn't want people to make a fuss over what he did, however I agree that it may prompt more to donate to GOSH (which can never be a bad result) and it also sends quite a message to others in his profession about the opportunity they have, because of their careers, to make a difference in others' lives.

I love that photo too! you can really see he loves kids and that he's so thankfully to the hospital :D I really love him! One of the best things of him is that he always stays himself, so sweet, cute, nice and everything :D as you all said, he has a heart of gold!!!

FAN, I'm reading it as saying he didn't 'secretly make a 1Mpound donation'.
Maybe I'm reading it wrong.
It happens to me sometimes.
I really enjoyed the previous picture of him in his Jack costume, with the kiddies. :)

Here's the article in question from Variety. It's worded very carefully. This doesn't surprise me as Depp usually prefers that his donations and good works are made without a lot press, unless for a specific event or promotion.
Here is the bit in question:
Reports surfaced in the U.K. media Monday incorrectly claiming that Depp... had also visited the hospital this week and donated $1.96 million.
Entire article:
Disney donates to U.K. hospital
Cash to help redevelopment of site
By ALI JAAFARLONDON —
The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday it was donating £1 million ($1.96 million) to the U.K.’s Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.
Move is part of a partnership to help the hospital raise $19.6 million to go toward a planned redevelopment, part of which will include a Disney-branded interactive zone for children and youths.
Disney prexy and CEO Robert Iger, accompanied by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, personally handed the check to Great Ormond Street chief exec Dr. Jane Collins.
Disney execs have also set up a dedicated appeal website that will see the first 50 people to sign up and donate to the Great Ormond Street appeal gifted with limited edition Peter Pan lithographs from Walt Disney studios.
The relationship between Disney and Great Ormond Street dates back nearly 70 years, when Walt Disney acquired the animation rights to the Peter Pan story in 1939. Disney released its animated version of the story in 1953.
“Peter Pan” author J.M. Barrie had handed the hospital, one of the U.K.’s leading providers in healthcare for children, all rights to the story in 1929.
The 2004 U.K. premiere of “Finding Neverland,” the live-action re-telling of how J.M. Barrie came to write the story starring Johnny Depp, saw proceeds benefiting the hospital.
Reports surfaced in the U.K. media Monday incorrectly claiming that Depp, whose own daughter was treated at the hospital after falling seriously ill while he was filming “Sweeney Todd” at the U.K.’s Pinewood Studios, had also visited the hospital this week and donated $1.96 million. Filming had to be suspended while Depp tended to his daughter.
Those claims were denied by Great Ormond Street’s press office who confirmed that while Depp had made a private visit to the hospital in December to express his thanks, he had not made any visit this week. They refused to confirm or deny if the thesp had made a donation on the grounds of confidentiality. Reps from the hospital were invited and name-checked at the European preem of Depp’s latest feature “Sweeney Todd” in London Jan. 10.
An officially-sanctioned sequel to Barrie’s tale of the boy who never grew up is currently in the works. “Peter Pan in Scarlet,” based on author Geraldine McCaughrean’s 2006 novel, is being developed by the U.K.’s Headline Pictures, BBC Films and U.K. Film Council.

This is the part that is confusing me.
| QUOTE |
Speculation was growing about the role of actor Johnny Depp in the hospital's fundraising plans.
It was claimed that the Pirates Of The Caribbean star, 43, made a secret donation of £1million after the hospital saved his daughter Lily-Rose's life when her kidneys failed last year. But a spokeswoman said: "That is incorrect."
|
To me this is worded that after L-R's illness ... which could be at any time? I know I write terribly, but this is confusing and it's by a writer!

I think that somewhere along the line Johnny did make some sort of donation but not last week and not the £1 million ($1.96 million) that was mentioned. DISNEY made that donation.

That just seems to me to be what Variety is saying:
Disney made the £1 million ($1.96 million) donation last week.
GOSH denied Depp made a visit and donation last week.
GOSH can't confirm or deny if a donation was made by Depp (at any time) due to confidentiality.
I know it's confusing, but...my best guess is again that Disney made the £1 million ($1.96 million) donation, Depp didn't visit last week, but may have made a donation at another time, but it's private. We know that's how Johnny runs his life. ;)
Depputante - January 15, 2008 07:26 PM (GMT)
This story is kind of like trying to decipher paparazzi pictures of book covers on yachts! Except this time there's concrete money as evidence! :P
No matter how much I try to know about Johnny, I DO admire his ability to keep private matters private! LOL....no less than about 4 kms or 4 months ahead/away from everyone else, whichever is greater! :P
Jesse - January 15, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
There are so many different ways all of these reports can be read and interpreted. The only one thing we do know is that GOSH received a donation of £1 million.
It doesn't really matter who gave what, where and how, the important thing is that the money was donated to a wonderful and deserving charity.

You took the words right out of my mouth Jesse. If Johnny did donate money it's really none of our business just his. That is what I love so much about this man, He doesn't use moments such as donating money to a charity to garner a little publicity for himself. I can't stand these celebrites ( I hate to use that word when it comes to Johnny. Just like he doesn't like the word "fan" when it comes to us) that use these things to get their names and pictures in papers and magazines. That's exploitation of those people that they are supposedly helping.
Nicci :angel
Depputante - January 15, 2008 11:32 PM (GMT)
It just goes to show , that what is often taken as 'normal behavior' of photos of stars showing their good deeds, is probably partially set up for publicity. Even if for a good cause, forced publicity is ... abnormal. Glad Johnny keeps to his own. I need to change my opinion of what's 'normal'.
There's a Johnny Lesson in here. Stop, pay attention to what's real and what's not.
