Title: Tim Burton "Dark Shadows" Director
Swag - January 12, 2008 11:17 PM (GMT)
I do not have the source of her information, but a friend of mine said she had heard that Tim Burton will be directing Dark Shadows and casting doesn't begin until 2009? Has anyone heard this?
It would be good if it were true! Tim Burton would definitely be the man!

MadScntst posted about this on Deppography here:
click here and scroll down to see the commentsIf anyone sees the magazine in question, please take a look at the article to see if MadScntst's source quoted it correctly. I'd say this is a definite time will tell item - but I'd love to see it happen.

Thanks Swag and Fantastic JD for the heads up!
Hopefully Madscntst or someone will be able to get their hands on an issue of this magazine! But as we know, with the strike, nothing is being written, so DS could be a long time in coming.
Swag - January 13, 2008 03:01 AM (GMT)
FANtasticJD thanks for the link!
On a side note the poster mentions Alice in Wonderland as one of Tim Burton's projects!
OMG that would be fantastic to see a TB version of AIW! :claphands
herestoyou - January 13, 2008 03:33 AM (GMT)
I agree Swag---Alice in Wonderland is no longer rumor, that one has been confirmed. :)

IMDB lists a release year of 2010 under a Dark Shadows entry, but with no further information.

I was able to find the magazine referred to, Horror Hound, and it has this to say about Dark Shadows and Tim:
| QUOTE |
| So, this next leads to the question that many a Dark Shadows fan is wondering. Will Tim Burton direct Johnny's rumored film version of the gothic soap? "I'm talking to him about it now." He reveals, "We just talked about it recently. We're definitely into it. I was a child when that came on. It like, hammered a nail into my head that one... Something really weird and amazing about it. I think the key is to find the right tone, and do it in the right way. Definitely, definitely into it!" |
Karen - January 21, 2008 04:07 AM (GMT)
Thanks Fan for the quote from the magazine!
hmmmmmm not too sure about this one...
Johnny! Please think about other directors.
Will HBC play ANgelique or Josette?
deppfan4ever - January 21, 2008 04:46 PM (GMT)
I don't know. I would like to see the great team of Depp and Buton tackle this one. Could be interesting. Eventually though these two are going to become joined at the hip if they aren't already.

Yeah, I vote for having Tim Burton direct Dark Shadows. I think is has a natural feel for the gothic element .

This site has a 6/3/08 article that says Peter Segal (director of Get Smart) confirmed Burton would be directing Dark Shadows. Usually, it seems like if the deal memo were signed, the studio or production company would officially announce the news though, not someone in Peter Segal's position.

If you haven't seen any of the TV episodes of Dark Shadows, I recommend trying to find some to watch. It was a very interesting and creepy show. I used to watch it when I came home from school each day, almost like a twisted version of a soap opera (sorry, "daytime drama").

That's very true, so I wonder too about why Segal??

I keep looking at Tim's website to see if they finalized Burton Directing Dark Shadows, he is by far the best to do this with Johnny or anyone.
I just hope they have decided and not announced it.
I will love to Johnny as the Mad Hatter ! That will be another fabulous performance by him without a doubt.
You can never have to much Johnny + Tim

Fingers crossed, toes crossed and anything else crossable (is that a word!!) is crossed.

Past issues are available for free on the internet. There is an entry in the current issue for Shantaram. An entry from the May 15, 2008 issue shows its status as "active development". It also lists Christi as one of the producers. I think films are listed when there is a change. Hope the Shantaram change reported is positive. I believe the current issue will be available online within a month or so. I just noticed that the current issue also includes a Rum Diary listing. I hope this is a good thing but I'm worried that we may be in for some bad news what with all the changes at Warner Bros. Here's the link to the PW website that lists contents for the two current issues. If you scroll down on the right is a link for past issues that are now free.

Thanks for the info about the free past issues Fan, their prices are higher than Variety OR Hollywood Reporter.
I think you're right, in that they list things when a change occurs, but who knows about any of them? Another time will tell situation.
Thanks again for sharing all of the info!! :thumbsup

This is the best news! Love Tim! He can do great things with Dark Shadows. When Tim and Johnny work together it is pure magic. Alice in Wonderland will also benefit from Tim's hand and ideas in the making.

While I was perusing the link above, I wandered over to the Film Experience blog spot. there is a wonderful discussion with photos about DS and various suggestions for filling the acting roster.
Thought you might find it interesting.

Oops-not working for me either Holly.
The spokesperson at the DS convention was pretty sure this project would be moving along as the script was just about finished. He also mentioned Johnny for sure as Barnabas, but they'll need to wait for his schedule to shape up. He did say that Tim was definitely the director , but nothing official has been released yet. But, as we all know, everything is "subject to change" in Hollywood these days.

I'll probably get shot for this, but I would really like to see Johnny and Tim wait for a couple of years before working together again. There have to be several other directors out there that JD has not worked with yet and I can already hear the critics whining about the two of them making the same Sleepy Hollow/Sweeney Todd type of movie again - ho-hum, another creepy Johnny Depp/Tim Burton movie. It's starting to get too predictable and comfortable. The edge is gone. Too much of a good thing takes the specialness (is there such a word?) away. And then there's the Alice in Wonderland thing too. A little worried about both of these and so close together.
Just my opinion though.

I think they are fantastic together and i SOO HOPE Johnny has Tim direct this film it is like the greatest match ! Tim is perfect for this type movie and they both understand each other and know each other so well , I can't get enough of joining them in their wolrd when their films hit the big screen.
Johnny and Tim.............Tim and Johnny the best combo ever !!!!!!!!!! :party woohoo

I'm not shooting you, I'm agreeing! What used to be edgy and experimental has sadly become predictable and stale, IMO. Tim Burton films used to be cutting edge and brilliant. I love Dark Shadows, but I don't want to see "Sweeney Todd the Vampire" in Collinsport, and I don't want to see HBC as Josette, Maggy or Dr. Hoffman. Actually I'd rather not see her at all. Tim's completed 4 films since 2003, and the last 3 have starred Depp.

I agree here and I really hate saying that knowing how much Johnny respects & appreciates Tim.
I too love Dark Shadows and the 60s show holds good memories for me. I really hope Burton stays true to the show. Hopefully Christi, Johnny's sister, who obviously has a great love for the show as well, will encourage Mr. Burton to stay true to the original. :crossfingers
(btw ~ the Chill channel is showing the Night of Dark Shadows. This is the original cast from the 60s soap) :snoopy

Losing the edge--sometimes comes with age. This is certainly something to consider and I agree about the anticipated critic's reaction.
Let's just hope they manage to give it something fresh.
and perhaps this won't come to pass as soon as we think or even at all.
Regardless--if it stars Johnny, I can't resist it. Movies let me get lost in my fantasies. Living in this world requires that.

Arnelle, I'm not as worried about what the critics' reactions could be as much as I am worried about their loyal "follower" base reactions will be. Those of us who have been around a long time, like me! I was really jived about DS until I heard Burton was attached. ho-hum I can see it now. I hope I am wrong. BUT judging on the predictable film that Burton made? I am worried and scared. I fear, and again, I hope I am wrong wrong wrong about this, but I fear that Burton can't do anything else. What's Burton got on the front burner now? Alice in Wonderland (probably with Johnny) a remake of his Frankenweenie, and Dark Shadows. (Sweeney Todd in modern day without the music, I fear.) Wonder if he will try to get Depp into Frankenweenie somehow? GROAN  That means that when counting the 6 films made or on the slate to be made, since 2003's Big Fish, Johnny has been or will be involved with 5 of the 6. AND the 6th is still "up for grabs." Hmmm nonononononono
BuccaRoux - August 21, 2008 03:11 PM (GMT)
Maybe I'm lucky, being one of the few people who never saw an episode of Dark Shadows. That way I have no pre-conceived notions and therefore will not be comparing it at all and will be able to enjoy it more. Sometimes ignorance pays off!
And now, because I have gotten a little into vampires because of the Twilight and Black Dagger Brotherhood books, I would like to see Johnny as a vampire! :ph43r:
Maur529Com - August 21, 2008 04:32 PM (GMT)
Dark Shadows will be great, whether Tim directs or not. Should we kind of be encouraging Johnny to do the movies that he wants to do and not sit around and complain how Tim has lost his touch or how he frequently casts the same people. It'll be a great movie.

We don't know it will be a great movie, we hope it will. I do fear Tim is losing his touch. Take a look at what he's done recently compared to what greatness he accomplished a few years ago.
Johnny chooses and persues the films he wants. And we, as film goers and Johnny "fans" are free to think as we wish. To like and dislike any project. We haven't all liked all of his films in the past and I can't see everyone liking all of his future choices either.
I personally don't see Johnny Depp as the kind of performer who wants us all to fawn over everything he does and every choice he makes just because he's "Johnny Depp". I will always tell the truth about how I feel, just as I believe he does.
I respect your opinion and hope that this does turn out to be a great movie.
linnie - August 21, 2008 06:27 PM (GMT)
I have to agree with depplyinlov. I would like to see Johnny working with many different directors and actors. I think Tim and Johnny work well together but another movie so close to Sweeney, in my opinion, is too close. Another movie after Dillinger with another director before DS would be good. I don't think Johnny's part in the Alice picture will be very large so do Rum Diary or most especially Shantaram before DS and working with Tim again (which I actually think is a good combo for that picture) but just not yet.
herestoyou - August 21, 2008 07:51 PM (GMT)
It's true that not everyone will like all of Johnny's films. Personally, I would like to see DS go ahead and I'm fine with Tim as the director. I thought STodd was brilliant and I think Tim does draw the best out of Johnny. I also feel he gives Johnny freedom to create his characters---which I know not everyone feels is good, but I can imagine for an actor it's liberating. Having said that, I don't think DS will be made for awhile, and I think there are some other projects Johnny has in the works that are speeding along. Obviously, it will depend on all the pieces coming together for everyone. I, too, want to see Johnny working with other directors, and I'm glad he had the experienece with MMann. Even though I would love to see Shantaram moving ahead quickly, I don't think that's going to happen---seems like a lot of obstacles in the way. Personally, I would rather see Johnny skip AIWonderland---I'm still pushing for Rex Mundi-lol!
