Johnny Depp stars in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies," shooting here for 3 months in March
JOHNNY DEPP stars as '30s gangster John Dillinger in writer/producer/director Michael Mann's "Public Enemies," a blockbuster big-budget project from Universal.
A massive 90-day shooting schedule in "The Third Coast" starts in early March: 45 days in the Chicago area and 35 days in Wisconsin.
The story is about the Feds taking down notorious gangsters – Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd -- during a booming crime wave in the ‘30s.
One of the important Wisconsin locations is the original, existing motor lodge of Dillinger's day in Little Bohemia, where the outlaw fatally shot FBI agents.

Did a bit of research. The Biograph Theatre is on Lincoln Ave, in Chicago and still in business. This is where he was "supposedly" killed.
Found a little background on the Biograph as well. Was it Dillinger that was killed here or not?
Hmmmmmmmm.

Ahh, I love it, but it's not actually mine---you didn't really think I could do that did you? I couldn't make one if Dillinger himself held a gun on me. I borrowed it from the Little Bohemia page. (edited post to give credit to the site, though I don't know who made the ani.)

| I gotta read this book. |
The book is great. When I pick it up to read I really have a hard time putting it down. I am finding some really interesting things out by reading this. I found out that Clyde from Bonnie and Clyde fame was arrested right here in Middletown and my mother has told me about the time when Dad was in the theatre in downtown Middletown. Somebody came out and broke into the movie to announce that everyone had to stay in the theatre due to the fact that Dillenger was right across the street eating in a diner. (BTW, that diner is still in operation). I guess that I have always thought that these people never came to these parts and because of this book I am finding out differently. Interesting!!!!

I'm looking forward to getting my copy. Went to Borders and they had to order it. Said it was out of print, so I have a used copy coming. I can't wait to get started.
Nicci, do you have any idea if they came north?
deppaholic - January 8, 2008 04:44 PM (GMT)
He came at least as far north as Fostoria....wouldn't be surpised to find out he roamed around other parts of NW Ohio.
"According to Burrough's book, Dillinger committed his first bank robbery in New Carlisle, OH in June 1933, was arrested in Dayton in September 1933, broke out of jail in Lima in October 1933, and then robbed a bank in Fostoria in May, 1934."

Dillenger robbed a bank in Fostoria, OH on May 3, 1934. His first bank robbery was in New Carlisle, OH in June 1933. Broke out of jail in Lima in Oct. 1934. He was arrested in Dayton at his girlfriend's apartment. Then his boys took him to Hamilton, OH and that is when they came through Middletown.

http://www.wiscnews.com/pdr/news/266437Movie director Mann scouts Baraboo location for Depp filmCapital Newspapers
BARABOO — Famed film director Michael Mann came to the city Saturday, giving hope that a movie about John Dillinger could be filmed in Baraboo 74 years after the outlaw himself is said to have paid a visit.
Mann met with a local banker and scouted the community as a possible shooting location for his upcoming gangster film "Public Enemies."
Baraboo is among 20 Wisconsin communities being considered. The flick will star Johnny Depp as Dillinger, a bank robber whose reign of terror included a narrow escape from the FBI after a shootout at a northern Wisconsin hideout.
Baraboo National Bank CEO Merlin Zitzner said he met with Mann and others on the production team. Mann and his colleagues are considering using the bank's exterior as a backdrop for a robbery scene. Zitzner said they were drawn to historical photographs displayed in the bank, whose exterior evokes the Depression era in which the film will be set.
"They're very interested in the history, in the pictures of the period," Zitzner said. "I think you can conclude that's a good sign."
Zitzner said Wisconsin shooting sites haven't yet been chosen. Universal Pictures executives are expected to announce locations by mid-January. Hollywood media report filming will begin in Chicago in March.
Zitzner said he was impressed with Mann, a University of Wisconsin graduate.
"I can see where he'd be a good director," he told the Associated Press. "He's got a real pleasant demeanor — like the kind of person that can get the most out of a big-ego actor."
The filming of a major Hollywood feature would create jobs and tourism, and civic boosters such as Zitzner hope a possible historical connection to Dillinger will help Baraboo land the film.
A nun claimed Dillinger attended Mass here in 1934, the year he was killed by police in Chicago.
In her memoirs, Sister Mary Liguori O'Toole recalls Dillinger and an associate visiting St. Mary's Ringling Hospital, which was operated by Franciscan nuns in the former home of one of Baraboo's circus impresarios.
One morning as O'Toole prepared to play the organ in the chapel, she noticed two men leaving the service. One man held a rosary. She asked them to stay until after the benediction.
O'Toole writes that she realized the man holding the rosary was Dillinger after spotting his picture in the Baraboo News Republic. A review of 1934 editions of the newspaper revealed no report of the incident.
Sister Bridgid McNamara, a retired nun who worked with O'Toole, said the incident was well-known at St. Mary's, which in later years served as a convent and a home for retired nuns.
"The sisters used to talk about this a lot," McNamara said. "We always enjoyed that story."

http://www.thenorthwestern.com/apps/pbcs.d...H/80110171/1987Depp to film parts of movie in Oshkosh?Production scout Robert Medcraft strolled in off the street unannounced and asked to tour the Grand Opera House Wednesday afternoon, said Jeff Potts, development and community relations manager for the historic High Avenue theater.
"The guy showed up out of the blue and we said, ‘sure, we’ll show you the hall,’" Potts said. "He basically said somebody recommended they check out the Grand, because it’s the oldest operating theater in the state; he loved the building because it’s nice and intimate, said it could make for a really great place to shoot a couple scenes."
"Public Enemies" is expected to start filming in March and is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s 2004 book "Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34."

[i]Johnny Depp to film in Aurora?[/i
]By Justin Kmitch | Daily Herald StaffContact writerPublished: 2/1/2008 12:18 AM | Updated: 2/1/2008 8:08
He's toiled in the chocolate factory as Willy Wonka and sailed the high seas as Capt. Jack Sparrow, but will Johnny Depp soon patrol the seedy bank-robbing underground in Aurora as John Dillinger?
City officials are keeping their fingers crossed.
Paramount Theatre Executive Director Diana Martinez says four-time Oscar-nominated film director Michael Mann and several of his associates spent much of Wednesday examining the nearly 80-year-old structure for "historical accuracy."
Mann, she said, expressed interest in using the Paramount in his planned 2009 film titled "Public Enemies," set to star Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.
"It's so exciting," Martinez said. "I feel really good that they'll be back."
Depp is signed on to play notorious bank robber John Dillinger in the film adapted from Bryan Burrough's book, "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34."
"They expressed a lot of interest in using the theater as the backdrop where Dillinger was killed," Martinez said Thursday. "The real theater was the Biograph in Lincoln Park, but it's since been updated. The Paramount, though updated, remains historically accurate, so 'Yay!' for us."
She said Mann and his accompanying art directors also commented many times how much they "like the look" of the city's downtown area.
Mayor Tom Weisner said seeing Depp strolling down the streets of downtown was a "pretty exciting prospect" for the Paramount, the city and his wife, Marilyn.
"It certainly speaks well of our beautiful city and the job they have done preserving the Paramount," he said. "Johnny Depp coming here would be great for Aurora. My only concern is that I will have a hard time keeping (Marilyn) at least 400 feet away from him at all times."
Martinez said the director did not give her a timetable for filming, but the Web site www.imdb.com lists the start date as March 10.
If Aurora is chosen as a location, Weisner said he expects the city will use the opportunity as a chance to advertise many more examples of its historic architecture.
Paramount Theatre, Aurora, IL.
Maybe they will film here instead of the actual Biograph... interesting... Actually closer to me.

Verdict not in on Depp movieDay of filming might occur at courthouse in Lafayette County
By CRAIG D. REBER TH staff writer
DARLINGTON, Wis. -- Actor Johnny Depp could be sitting in the Lafayette County Courthouse sometime this spring.
Early last month, Lafayette County Clerk Linda Bawden learned that producers of the upcoming film "Public Enemies" were considering using the courtroom for a day of shooting. "Public Enemies" features Depp as gangster John Dillinger.
Directed by Michael Mann, four-time Academy Award nominee, the film is about federal agents who try to take down notorious gangsters like Dillinger, Lester "Baby Face Nelson" Gillis and Charles Arthur "Pretty Boy" Floyd during the booming crime wave in the 1930s.
According to Bawden, members of the film's crew, including Mann, initially toured the courthouse on Jan. 6. They took pictures and tested lighting. The courtroom attracted the most attention, she added. On Jan. 24, several members of the film's art department returned, making more measurements and taking photos of various courthouse areas. The crew was there for about an hour and a half.
"I was told that was a good sign," Bawden said. She said crews are
planning a one-day shoot, most likely in April or May. They would be in town two days prior to shooting and a day after to wrap up production.
"We are very excited," Bawden said. "Finally, something positive and great for Lafayette County."
Bawden said she was told that filming would take place at the courthouse, although nothing has been received in writing. Tony Hozeny, a state Department of Commerce spokesman in Madison, emphasized that nothing has been confirmed to date.
"We've had discussions, and we would be delighted to have them film here," Hozeny said. "But there is no confirmation of this."
Hozeny said the state offers a film production services tax credit program. It offers assistance to film makers to help offset their costs incurred while making accredited productions in the state.
Built between 1905 and 1907, the Lafayette County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features marble walls, tile floors and a Tiffany glass rotunda. It is decorated with murals and statuary throughout. Bawden calls it an "original, a beautiful courthouse."
Lafayette County isn't the only Wisconsin site that could be tapped for a film scene. Richland Center's M&I Bank is reportedly a site, but nothing there is confirmed either, according to Hozeny.
It might not be surprising that Mann has an interest in filming in Wisconsin. A Chicago native, Mann studied English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was an active member of the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. He earned Academy Award nominations for best director and best motion picture in 2000 for "The Insider."
The movie, scheduled for a 2009 release, is a screen adaptation of Bryan Burrough's 2004 book, "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34."
