HIS recent roles have included those of Willy Wonka, a pirate captain and debauched 17-century poet.
Now US superstar actor Johnny Depp is being touted to play one of the most famous characters in Irish fiction - Sebastian Dangerfield.
The American will take on the hero's role in the first ever film version of the 'The Ginger Man' - the acclaimed novel by JP Donleavy.
It sparked controversy after being turned into a stage play which was halted after three performances in 1959 due to opposition from the Catholic hierarchy.
But its author has rejected repeated attempts by Hollywood to make a film version.
Donleavy's change of heart is said to be related to the casting of Depp, who impressed him during a meeting recently in New York.
"Mr Depp is something else. He is very bright, extremely intelligent, and very knowledgeable," said the writer.
Singer Shane McGowan will appear as Brendan Behan in the film version.
Considered pornographic on its publication in the fifties, 'The Ginger Man' tells the tale of feckless, womanising American demobbed soldier - supposedly - studying law in Trinity College after the Second World War.
