I find it hard to figure out the motivation of any of the female characters in this book. We see them mainly thru the eyes of Sebastian and never really get into their minds. So I think it is difficult to see them as more than one or two dimensional characters.

Ok, but were you surprised when she went back to him? I was. I was totally amazed. I figured he was using her for her money and had no intention of a relationship with her, so when they hook up at the end? I was surprised.

It was funny that she was different when she came back. She was controlling and she wanted a baby. Yeah I was surprised.

I'm not really that surprised that Mary went back to him. Looking at the kind of background she had with her father, enduring the physical and prehaps verbal abuses he's made her suffer. She prehaps sees Sebastian as a way out, even if he is using her. Maybe she even realises this, but prehaps doesn't want to admit it to herself. Why couldn't she just take her savings and get out on her own? I guess if her self esteem has taken a bashing no doubt, she probably feels she lacks the courage to make a life for herself alone, as is often the case when women are so abused. She wants so desperately for someone to love her physically as well as emotionally.

She was pretty forceful when she came back.

He was a bit "taken back" by her.

i agree that mary saw sebastian as a way out.....and loneliness and desperation makes strange bedfellows, doesn't it. she was in a new city, she was making some friends (whatever was going on w/her) but she was still learning who she was. so when she went back to him it was because he was familiar. i don't think it will be for long.
