How do you think their backgrounds will affect how they see the film version of The Ginger Man?

That's a tough one! Head scratcher..lol

I'll guess that when talking about people with artistic talents, they [the talents] either come from within or from outside influences and observations. Or even both.

A painter will most certainly take what they see in the world and add their own interpretation. Same with a musician/song writer. Same with a poet. It all depends on how they construct their art.

Regarding JPD and JD, there's obviously a notable generation gap. But they have obviously made some sort of mutual connection. Maybe with their shared love of the arts, or literature or maybe shared sensibilities/outlook on life and the world, and the people in it! Johnny has shared a good deal of his time with some very colourful characters, as we all know, and has played a fair few of them himself....'wink'! This is undoubtedly where Johnny's art stems from, the observation of others mixed with his own interpretations. Mr Donleavy, also an avid observer of the human condition, how else would he bring such colourful characters alive and give them such complexities on the written page. His must have been a life full of such vivid characters, since being of Irish heritage and living there.

This being said, with these two men getting together, we can expect one very interesting movie! Dare we even hope to call it a 'masterpiece'? We'll see.

I think there is something that "artists" share when it comes to how they see the world...maybe it's a dimensional thing?

Johnny seems to have a natural affinity for the 50's and early 60's and its rebel/free spirit philosophy. If you look at who he reads and admires, Kerouac and the beat writers, HST, a couple of the artists? he admires (can't think of names off the top of my head) from this same era and philosophy. JPD fits right in with this whole period. Blame his brother who is about 10 years older than he is and turned him on to the beat poets and writers when Johnny was an impressionable teenager. LOL

I think their artistic background, unique talents, and creative experence transcend any differences in age and will enable them to be potentially great collaborators as well as significant sources of inspiration to each other. They are both accomplished artists who strongly believe in the integrity of their work, and each has a lot to contribute to the creative process. I think of their collaboration on this project as a symbiotic relationship where each one takes his turn inspiring and influencing the other.

Good thoughts Sheila! I think you have pointed out some shared traits. I think this will be a fabulous film.
