Title: DS Discussion #6 Plots?

Karen - October 29, 2007 12:08 PM (GMT)
In an interview on the DVD Jonathan Frid talks about one reason DS ended, and he mentions that there were so few plot lines for this sort of story. LOL

Here's a clip from that wonderful collinwood.net site where you see a trailer that the network ran promoting their time travel plot.

In the first series of DVDs we see the introduction of Maggy/Josette and her kidnapping by Barnabas. What did you think of that plot or, for that matter all of the plots and storylines that they used? Fun? Confusing? Silly? Brilliant? Have an opinion about any of them??

I've only seen the first set of DVDs so far, but I thought the Maggie/Josette plot line was good.

Yes, I'm still with the Maggie/Josette story and I like it---Barnabas is chasing Maggie in an underground tunnel---- :(

I didn't care for the Carolyn vs. mother plot line---------who's that rocker/biker guy?-lol! Reminded me of Billy Idol! I also think the "dead husband buired in the basement" line is weak----wouldn't Carolyn understand if her mother was just honest with her?

I ended up zipping through these episodes to get to the Barnabas/Josette ones.

The clips won't play for me, boohoo. Wahtever it is needed to view them I don't have installed or whatever. I seem to run into that problem with a lot of sites.

I was absorbed by the whole thwarted love story of Barnabas and Josette and Angelique's jealous wrath. Almost anything else bored me a bit.

I loved the "back-in-time" back story. The costumes and hair styles were right up my romantic alley.

Maggie/Josette works for me too.
Makes me wonder ...Bride of .... theme.
Good story line there.
Simple, easy to remember. :)

I really enjoyed the Barnabas/Josette storylines along with all of her reincarnations. Also I'm a big fan of Quentin and the two times Dan Curtis decided to use Turn of the Screw, my favorite novella.

Ahhh Quentin and that lovely theme song!

I'm still upset DS revival of 1991 didn't go to a second season...Adrian Paul was going to be cast as Quentin! *drools*

Aren't you right about that! Adrian Paul had me drooling in places I'd never drooled before. Wouldn't he have been Quentilicious? Oh, I loved the original rascal rabbit, David Selby, too. And, wasn't Ben Cross just starting to get the gist of the remorseful vampire bit down pat? I'm certain he would have had great success if only the show had continued. Fie on Warren Littlefield, NBC head of programming for issuing the death warrant. Later, seeing the error of his ways, he recanted, asking Dan Curtis to come on back, but by that time, the executive producer was too steamed to want to revisit NBC again with his jugular juggernaut.

You know, Adrian Paul is another one who is aging very slowly, (49 looks damn good on him) so there's still time to cast him as Quentin. Why not?

I agree! Adrian Paul is definitely Quentin. On the slim :( chance that he does not get picked, or, for that matter, if for Pete's sake, JD decides to produce and direct, rather than star as the main man, here's my alternate cast:

1. Barnabas Collins: Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond on "Lost")
2. Quentin Collins: Josh Holloway (Sawyer on "Lost")
3. Willie: Dominic Monaghan (Charlie on "Lost")

Did I mention that the alternate cast was from "Lost"? Not a big "Lost" nut, but I do watch it for these three, especially Desmond, who with his angst, sweet sexiness, time-traveling, and lost love (s) so reminds me of Frid's Barnabas. Sawyer has that good ol' Southern bad-boy charm that David Selby infused Quentin with, and Charlie was just so nervous and loveable, always stumbing into trouble.

It's just a thought...or, perhaps, a...dream.

I loved the Josette stories, too. Did you ever see that movie, "The Innocents" with Deborah Kerr and Pamela Franklin, that was based on the novella? Did you see the Dan Curtis version? Both were excellent. What's not to love about Quentin? :D
I was so glad when he got to grow his own side whiskers. Such a marvelous character. David Selby was incredible. I loved him in the 1840 PT in his relationship with Samantha. David Selby should have played Rhett Butler in "Gone With The Wind".

Sounds like a good thought and a great dream!

Gosh, I completely had forgottne about The Innocents. I loved Deborah Kerr!

I'm a TOTS (Turn of the Screw) nut and love the story in any format...though I have my favorites. Dan's version was ok, but I have some issues with it. (i.e. making Miles a teenager, altering how he died).

Here's a bit of trivia for you though. Megs Jenkins portrayed Mrs. Grose in both The Innocents and Dan's version...PLUS Michael Redgrave played the Uncle in The Innocents and his daughter Lynn portrayed the Governess in Dan's version. :)

I also enjoyed the storyline wherein Barnabas bites/kidnaps Maggie. Frid really raised the acting levels -- everyone seemed to get better and better. it is magical.

There won't be a "Quentin" in the potential Depp film. Too crowded. The character might work in a TV version, or a sequel.

Hi Wes and :welcome to JDR!

You think it will be too "crowded" for Quentin? wahhh

Is this an opinion or do you have some info about the script? ;)

wes - February 14, 2008 02:30 AM (GMT)
Thank you.

I read a small synopsis somewhere... it was not a script. There was no mention of "Quentin". If you think about it, the "Quentim" storyline didn't happen until long after the arrival of "Victoria" and "Barnabas" -- in both the ABC and NBC versions.

I do have the scripts for the MGM film and the WB versions; and, they focus on the arrival of Barnabas. I believe the introduction of both "Barnanas" and "Quentin" in one film would be much too dense... both characters' first stories could not be covered in one film (not that I wouldn't mind seeing them try).

Karen - February 14, 2008 02:33 AM (GMT)
Thanks Wes for sharing that with us. It will be interesting to watch as this project moves forward, just what we do get in the way of characters and storyline.
