Karen - October 24, 2007 05:27 AM (GMT)
CAlls are coming in....I'll be posting as fast as I can, please scroll down...

Please note that this is NOT a review.

It is feedback.

These are thoughts that were shared with me from our people who were there tonight. I typed and made notes as I spoke to them on their phones. We will have more detailed info tomorrow.

All in all? everyone was overwhelmed and thrilled beyond belief with the entire package.

We thank them for their time and look forward to what else they have to share with us. We'll try to get an exact run time for you.

JDR had 8 people at the screening tonight. Best guess is that after bringing in extra chairs there were maybe 40 -50 people.

They were not asked to sign a confidentiality report. They are all on their way home and will post when they get home or in the morning. We thank them for being our eyes and ears tonight.

We thank Paramount and Universal for making this possible

Here are random thoughts and words used as I jotted notes.

Johnny CAN SING

When he stated singing, it brought me to tears.

The Q&A was more of an open discussion about what they thought of the movie, who it would attract etc.

Richard Zanuck was there.

Amazing

Incredible

The duet between Todd and Turpin was beautiful

By the Sea was hysterical.

All of the cast was great

The opening "Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd" was missing, this is referencing the Ballad of Sweeney Todd. It is not there at all.

About 90% of the film is sung. (edit: Studio rep says 75%)

It's true to the stage production

Lots of blood that looks like red nail polish...not blood

Lots of throats being slit

Rickman is more evil than Snape as Turpin

Sound mixing still going on...about 5 weeks worth

Oh my God...

He gets to your heart

So Tim Burton

Some there didn't like musicals.

Since this was a private screening there was free popcorn and sodas

Zanuck stayed and walked around after.

Everyone putting on the event loved Johnny.

Lots of questions were asked about what audience it would attract.

ST fans said it was faithful to the play.

The person running the event said that Sondheim loved the film

This is not the final product..clean up, sound and dialogue to be cleaned up.

This is very Tim Burton, it's HIS vision of The Sweeney Todd story.

Some parts are almost comic book in style.

HBC is wonderful

Depp is manical..

Pretty much what was seen is the end product.

herestoyou - October 24, 2007 06:30 AM (GMT)
Just back from the screening and first a huge THANK YOU to Karen for providing this wonderful opportunity!

I attended with my hubby.

Run time was under 2 hours, but not sure of exact time--1 hour 45 or 50 minutes sounds about right. The overall response was very positive. It did stay very true to the Broadway version, but yes, no singing of The Ballad of STodd, but it wasn't missed by me. According to the lady in charge, 75% of the film is singing. The blend between the singing and speaking is very smooth---the whole film moves very well.

Yes, our dear Johnny can sing! He was better than I expected and loved his duets with Lovett(Little Priest) and Rickman(not sure of the title) The visuals with "By the Sea" are just hilarious---Depp fans will love this part!

There is LOTS of blood, but even little ol' squeamish me could watch it! Some parts were similar to Sleepy Hollow blood wise.

The look of the film has Tim's stamp on it for sure.

Johnny's expressions, actions and singing are spot on in my opinion!

The trailers don't match up to the sequence of events in the film.

Just some random thoughts while they're fresh in my mind.

Great to see Julie and Anne as we'd met before at a Pirates event. The lady in charge told us after the discussion that she met Johnny on the set of STodd and she said he really is the nicest guy in the world.(Surprise!) She was very cute as she said "I normally don't gush about movie stars, but..........." Yes, we know!

It's late now, but I'll give more details to Karen and she can post!

With that happy news, I'm going to turn in (and dream of the nights when I can put on the soundtrack and go to sleep with Johnny crooning in my ear! :) )

I know for sure THe Ballad of Sweeney TOdd was cut, I'll have to check the list of songs from the soundtrack to check to see if others were cut. Some may have been shortened a little. I don't know how to describe Johnny's singing--it seemed somewhat deeper than what I was expecting. What I liked was that he still put so much expression/emotion into his singing.

jeppody - October 24, 2007 07:02 AM (GMT)
woohoo What a great way to wake up, reading all about Sweeney. woohoo

You did a wonderful job of getting people in Karen, :thanks , as we are all benefitting from their good fortune.

Thanks for the info Donna, and I am so happy that you enjoyed it.

I never doubted Johnny can sing, as I think that Tim wouldn't have ruined his movie just for their friendship. But it is wonderful to have it confirmed. :D

I guess we will have to wait now until everybody wakes up, to hear more.

I can't wait.

:snoopy

Oh, and :welcome RaspberryBeret, you have picked the perfect time to join in. I hope we hear more from you.

Oh my God, what a night!!! But first, I want to THANK YOU Karen for this amazing opportunity! It was wonderful to share it with JDR friends Anne, Donna, Michelle, and my "non-Johnny" friend Erin. It;s late, so I'll cut to the chase:

Johnny can SING, baby! He brought tears to my eyes when he first appeared on-screen. He has a lovely, rich, melodic voice and I think everyone will be amazed by him once again. His acting was brilliant and he conveyed every possible feeling through his singing. And some of the more intense scenes...wickedy wonderful. And bloody. Very bloody. But I think that it was done very well (still having a "Broadway" feel) I'm typically sqeamish, but I sailed right through this without hiding behind my hands... too much. :P

HBC was wonderful and was such a sympathetic soul. I really felt for her Mrs. Lovett. The scene/song with Toby was so heart-felt and warm. And wait till you see the "Seaside" scene. HYSTERICAL!

SBC was perfect as Pirelli and Alan Rickman was SO vile and wicked.
And the Beadle...EW! But well played!

OK, I'm a bit loopy right now, so I will continue my post tomorrow...

jeppody - October 24, 2007 07:40 AM (GMT)
:thanks for your review Julie. This is getting better with every post. woohoo

Can someone tell us what the others were like singing please. Alan? SBC? HBC? I'm just curious.

Anne x

Burleycue - October 24, 2007 07:56 AM (GMT)
The others were great in there singing parts, but the two that really stood out were the romantic leads (Anthony & Johanna) They were pitch-perfect and sounded like "professional singers" to me. HBC & SBC were great as well, although their "singing" is done more in a talking style...not as "rich" as the others IMO. Alan Rickman didn't sing as much as the others, but he did a fine job. And the young boy that played Toby was great, too. His singing is done in a child-like manner, which is perfect for the film. His duet with HBC was heartbreaking...

And Johnny? Again, he just blew me away. I can go on and on about him, but I won't...for now. :P

I know everyone is just wanting to know about this wonderful film, but please remember that the people we sent last night are not Sweeney Todd fans per se. They are just movie fans, at least 3 did not know anything about ST. They will do their best to answer your questions, but please be understanding if they don't or can't answer everyone's questions exactly, hopefully someone will be able to answer you.

JustBelieve - October 24, 2007 12:14 PM (GMT)
Thanks Karen. :)

First of all, thank you for sharing your experiences with us! It sounds like it was amazing all the way around.

Secondly, a HUGE thank you to Karen! You made it possible for quite a few people to go, and then stayed up very late to share their feedback with us.

:thanks :bow :thanks :bow :thanks :bow

It's fantastic to hear how impressed people are with Johnny's singing! I'm thrilled that everyone had such a positive reaction to the film.

*Off to write my letter to Santa - "Dear Santa, the only thing I want is to be able to attend the premier. I've been a good girl. Really!"*

And :welcome to RaspberryBeret!
