Now I"m starting to worry! :(

Thanks for that, Karen. I'm sorry but not surprised to see that "The Rum Diary" has dropped off the list. It was on the version released last month but I didn't see how it could be made effectively between the end of Shantaram filming and the 7/1 potential strike date.

A few titles jump out at me with some alarm. First, there are many remakes, some of which should simply not be touched. I include my favorite sci fi film of all time "The Day the Earth Stood Still". No one and nothing could match the stunning portrayals by Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe and others of the 1951 b&w original. It may not have had the spectacular special effects but was all the more impactful for it. Keanu Reeves? please... Among many other questionable re-dos (do we really need another "Escape from Witch Mountain"?) they are also scheduling the 3rd version of "The Thomas Crown Affair". Nothing could top the Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway original. Leave it alone for heaven's sake.

I also see that "On the Road" is listed. According to Wikipedia, the director, Walter Salles, said in an interview that he plans to make the film on a low budget, with unknown actors and using a hand-held camera. However Carolyn Cassidy said in an interview with "The Independent" that Kirsten Dunst has been lined up to play her. (click here for article). Salles did a wonderful job with "The Motorcycle Diaries" so maybe this one will be ok. Francis Ford Coppola is producing.

sigh. I guess it's just more of the same: too many remakes and sequels. A few new and brave choices. Lots of question marks. I simply cannot wait for "Shantaram"! :D

I can think of absolutley no remakes that have benfitted from being remade. If it was a good film, let it alone, and if it wasn't good to begin with, how is remaking a bad idea going to produce a good story?

I agree with you about The Day The Earth Stood Still, FAN. :(

I agree about the Day the Earth Stood Still! Klaatu barada nickto! ;)

But I did enjoy Johnny's remake of CATCF. I never liked the Gene Wilder version, thought it was too goofy. LOL

Thanks for the news update Karen--SHantaram moving up a week? Interesting.

THe local news here has reports every night about the strike possibility. It shows reps from both sides going into meetings around the clock. However, the reports are that they still are far apart on some key issues. It appears that TV shows would be most affected by the Writer's Guild strike at this time. However, if it 's prolonged, then of course the film aspect will be affected as well. Still hoping it gets worked out----

Minor note-NBC that has been based in Burbank for years, is moving its operations to Universal City since the buy out----

According to this article, it was changed because of the strike.

According to this website the monsoon season is "from mid June until September."

I'd look for a UK premiere to be before the holidays.
