Title: Johnny on cover of GQ Anniversary issue

Karen - September 17, 2007 12:27 PM (GMT)
Seems like they will have 10 different covers. My quesion? How do I make sure I find the one with Johnny on it?

He was the best-dressed man in Esquire . . . the wet T-shirt model in VMAN . . . and now, Tom Brady gets the highest of honors from the editors of GQ. The clothes-horse quarterback graces one of 10 commemorative covers of the magazine's 50th anniversary edition, which hits newsstands on Wednesday. Brady is in pretty stylish company: Other covers feature Muhammad Ali, Johnny Depp, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Michael Jordan, Paul Newman, and Boston's own John F. Kennedy. (Brady is also featured in the magazine's spread of "50 Most Stylish Men of the Past 50 Years.") What helped Brady make the cut? Jim Moore, GQ's creative director, said it was the three Super Bowl rings, of course . . . plus Brady's charity work, his leadership on the field, and his self-mocking 2005 appearance on "Saturday Night Live." "We liked the fact that Tom Brady represents today," Moore said. "He's got a great spirit about him and he's an incredible leader. . . . We feel that his career is just getting going." Brady is also the only GQ cover boy who got new pictures taken for the occasion; for the other covers, GQ used iconic photos from each subject's era. Photographer Richard Burbridge, known for his stark and provocative portraits, shot Brady over the summer in New York. "I think that picture has a lot of integrity and soul," Moore said. And it's an image, he said, that's meant to raise questions about Brady's future. "He's been seen with politicians; could he be a politician someday? He's been seen with Hollywood stars; could he be in Hollywood someday?" One thing for sure: He's got a future in modeling if he wants it.

Thanks Karen

So it looks like it will be an older picture of Johnny. I wonder if it will be one they have used on their cover before?

Johnny is in some pretty amazing company there. He's the only current-generation actor in the bunch, a great honor for this important issue. These poeple are all icons, even Brady in his own way. I can't wait to see which picture they choose. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a new shot from an old shoot. I'll be out there Wednesday to be sure to get the Johnny cover! btw, I love the way they referred to Brady as being in "pretty stylish company". What happened? When did the world suddenly discover Johnny's great and unique style and decide it was good?

I'm excited for this and so proud of Johnny. Thank you, Karen, for this great news.

You're welcome!

I am so glad that I go to Border's almost everyday and peruse their magazine section. *L*

Boy, wonder how I will find a Johnny cover--nothing against the others, but I'll be looking for the Depp one! I remember the last Oscars or some awards show that Johnny attenede, on those so called "fashion" reviews, only one guy, can't remember who, made the statement that Johnny is so stylish because he doesn't follow trends. He's not afraid to wear what he wants which in this guy's mind made him very "stylish." Needless to say, others in this group didn't agree. However, look at him now------Thanks for the heads up Karen, my local drugstores will probably hide when they see me heading towards the magazine rack!

I'm pretty sure that Johnny's will be sold out everywhere
and very quicker than others.... :crybaby

your best bet would be to wait until it comes up on eBay.
yeah,it sucks!

Sparrowette - September 18, 2007 01:44 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately here in S. California he does sell out first beforea nyone else. I have a feeling I will be looking on EBAY too. I will check at the drug store across from my office. Ift is coming out tomorrow?

Thank You for the info Karen as always.

Hmmmmm.......1 in 10...............I don't like those odds. Not one bit. Wish I had some of that lucky potion from HP & the Deathly Hallows.

I guess that I will have to check out Barnes and Noble. Finding one with Johnny on the cover may be like finding that perverbial "needle in a haystack" but I will do my best.

GQ now has these up on their site. It's a photo by Anton Corbijn from 1995:

Here's a bigger scan of it taken from Studio Magazine, 5/95. Note GQ photoshopped the cigarette out!

Thanks, FANtasticJD! That's a sharp eye ye got on ye!
How interesting that they removed the cigarette----it looks odd anyway because it's not the hand-rolled type we've gotten used to seeing. Other than that, I'd say he hasn't changed much in 12 years!

Ahoy Fan! Great find!!! Thank ye for sharing that with us!

About that ciggy that was photoshopped out. Hmmm It makes his mouth looks strange. Savvy? Wonder why they just didn't use another cover?

jeppody - September 19, 2007 12:17 PM (GMT)
Good find Maggy, thank'ee.

I must say though, I never did like that picture, even with a ciggie attached. After the beautiful pictures they have had of Johnny on the covers in the past, I'm disappointed. :(

I am guessing that a man picked that one......keelhaul the scurvey dog

Pixiedust - September 19, 2007 06:56 PM (GMT)
Thanks for showing us. I was very curious what pic they would use.
I have already checked the stores around me and they dont have it out yet , I guess I'll give them a few days to get it on the shelf LOL.

Depputante - September 19, 2007 08:40 PM (GMT)
That quite the dis-service to all the wonderful other pictures they could have chosen. He's the only one with that scowl/squinting at the camera too.

deppfan4ever - September 19, 2007 08:57 PM (GMT)
They could have picked better. They needed a woman for that job. :P I know a group of pirate wenches that would have applied for the job.

Yes, I'm a bit disappointed meself!
And his is the only one not in color, which sometimes is what I prefer, but not this time 'round.
But I be headin' out to the store in search of it tomorrow anyway! :P

AYE-we have an accord! Me thinks that with all the pics of Johnny not smiling, which are incredibly good looking, they could only come up with that one? user posted imageThese bilge rats need to walk the plank! I don't think I'll be buying this one unless there's a fantastic piece on the inside-------

Sparrowette - September 20, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
Why did they choose this particular one? He looks good but it is not very flattering to him. There are so many to choose from. A little disappointed.

Hubby was looking over my shoulder as I checked out the cover photo and he said "Did someone beat Johnny up?" Not the greatest pic, but I'm sure I'll buy it anyway. IF I can find it! :P

carpediem - September 21, 2007 05:38 AM (GMT)
Wikipedia has this explanation of the photographer's style (which really seems to describe this photo of Johnny to a great extent):

"Corbijn tends to eschew traditional glamour photography, instead favoring a rawer look, often in black-and-white. His subjects appear to be calm and far removed from everyday life. His photographs show raw emotion. His patented and influential style of black and white imagery with stark contrasts on grainy film (sometimes referred to as "overcooked") has been imitated and copied in such extent that it has become a rock cliché and a vital part of the visual language in the 1990s"

This photo of Johnny reminds me of some photos of James Dean. Good company to be in.

Ouch! LOL

But it is true what your hubby said, they messed up his photo :(

Karen - September 21, 2007 12:46 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the background on the photographer Carpediem, that was very interesting and actually confounds me more about why they chose this particular shot only to alter it.

They've removed the ciggy from his mouth and that alters the landscape of the photograph and makes his mouth look "odd." There are other cover photographs that they could have used. The ciggy gave reason and balance to his facial expression and gave the picture symmetry, in my opinion.

Photography of this sort is art. Not just a snap with the old "brownie"... you don't remove the prop that causes the face to have the expression it does. It takes away the reason.

FANtasticJD - September 21, 2007 01:08 PM (GMT)
Corbijn also recently made a film about the tragic life/death of rock singer Ian Curtis of the group Joy Division. It won an award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. He's a very talented guy and an old rocker, right up Johnny's alley. It's such a shame that GQ had to pick a shot that they then ruined by altering it. It's akin to altering a Stieglitz photo or a Picasso painting because of some ridiculous editorial reasons. I love the Corbijn shoot even if it doesn't show Johnny at his most beautiful. It brings out other qualities that show more of what's going on underneath that gorgeous exterior. BUT, for heaven's sake, choose a photo that doesn't 'need' to be altered.

I'll buy the thing anyway just because it's Johnny and a big honor for him to have been chosen. Also, I want to do my bit to enhance the sales of his cover. That will show GQ that he's a selling point. Maybe we'll get more covers with new shoots in the future.

That's part of my issue--doctoring the photo. I love this photographer as well, but I think GQ could have put more effort into their Johnny choice. I'll need to see the mag before I decide on whether to purchase or not. I understand those that want to buy it to support Johnny. Having said that, the only cover I've found in my area has been Obama, so it may be a mute point for me. I could handle the expression on his face, but as was stated above, the chopping out of the ciggy gives the mouth a strange quality. Just my opinion.............. will be checking other stores this weekend ,,,,,,,,,,

That is the way here Donna. The only issue I have found is the one with Obama. So I doubt that I will see the one with Johnny around here anywhere.

The Obama cover is for September's issue. The 50th anniversary one is for October. So don't panic, those who, like me, can still only find September. The new issue will be out everywhere soon!

And I'm buying the maagzine primarily because I want it. Johnny as Johnny covers are few and far between and even if I hated the cover photo, which I don't, I'd buy it. Even better is that it's a very special issue for GQ and a great honor for Johnny to be chosen. The side issue is that many magazines, not just GQ, track how covers of major magazines sell. For very selfish reasons I want the JD cover to do well so he's pushed to be on more major magazine covers. I very much doubt if he cares at all. For all we know he may have turned down lots of prestige covers.

edit: as of late Saturday it still wasn't on the shelves of central CT!

MerryK - September 22, 2007 02:37 AM (GMT)
I stopped after work at the bookstore and still no 50th Anniv GQ's out.

But then.. after I got back from the movies tonight.. I had to run out and get some cat food.. so just went to the grocery store .. Krogers .. and who was staring back at me.. but Johnny!! So they are now one less issue... they only had about 5 .. all different ones.. sitting out.

Cant say it's an issue I'm highly impressed with.. but it's a Johnny cover.

AZDeppfan - September 22, 2007 03:34 AM (GMT)
I got my copy today. I agree, not my favorite picture at all, but I had to have it. I think it's a test - to see if Johnny's fans are so dedicated they will buy any magazine with Johnny on the cover no matter how unflattering! Well, I will!! :P

herestoyou - September 22, 2007 04:39 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the info. that Obama is Sept. issue. I'm very glad that GQ at least cosiders Johnny as one of the 50 Best Dressed or Most Stylish, can't remember exactly what the honor was called. Interesting about the VFair cover as that wasn't one of my favorite pics either.

MerryK - September 22, 2007 12:10 PM (GMT)
Also inside they show thumbnail size pics of alot of the previous covers and there is the one of Johnny on the cover of the October 1993 GQ issue.

They didnt show.. or at least my eyes didnt spy one of that lovely 2003 cover .. user posted image

The other pic of him sitting on the stove is at least a full page pic... so thats nice!

Also on the inside cover of the cover page they have a little introduction to the readers as to why they chose who they did for this particular issue.. which I thought was rather nice...

I liked the godfathers of cool .. and the what you accomplish, what you create and how you play the game references. And of course Johnny's name was one of the 3 in particular they mentioned :D

I saw the magazine at Krogers today but the cover had JFK on it. So I looked for the pic of Johnny on the inside. When I saw it I snickered and made the comment that I hope that wasn't a gas stove because with that *HOT* body sitting on it there was bound to be a fire.

I agree---I found it today at Borders and they had several copies of all the covers so I think it just was put out today. I didn't find it in any of my local drugstores or supermarkets though.

The cover above would have been my choice too, that's one :upinsmoke picture!
