Title: News about Sweeney Todd
Description: This just in

Since this is all tentative and subject to change, please don't repost this info. Everyone is so excited about this film that if something gets changed or postponed... so many are disappointed.

OK that said, this is the latest that we've heard on Sweeney Todd.

I understand that they will be testing a ST clip this weekend, they are looking into doing one or two test screenings of the movie in late Sept or Oct in Calif... and looking to have a *first look* movie preview on an entertainment style show ( most likely ET ) . No dates on any of this would be out..they just said *soon.* for the trailer and the first look.

I think they are waiting so as to avoid over exposure as this movie will be an Award contender. I think the Dreamgirls trailer came out in Sept and the movie on Christmas last year. By the time it came out a lot of people (mostly industry folks) were tired of the hype.

As we get more concrete info, you know we'll update things!

Wouldn't it be incredible to go to a test screening and suddenly realize it's ST?

I know someone who had that experience with Harry Potter and they were so excited to see the work in progress. Some of the special effects weren't even in it yet.

It sounds like DreamWorks is pulling out all the stops to make sure they get this 'right'!

Thanks for the news, Karen. They've been fiddling with the website and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll post more there soon, just a tidbit to hold us over till the trailer.

This is GREAT news, Karen! We're getting sooo close now! Keeping a sharp eye on things... :ph43r: Thanks for the update! woohoo

JohnnyFanatic - September 14, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the update, Karen! I have been very pleased with the way Dreamworks has been handling the promotion for this film so far. I think it's a good idea to hold off on showing the trailer for now because I remember the huge backlash that happened last year with Dreamgirls (with people complaining it was being too overexposed). It looks like they don't want to repeat the same mistake this year with ST, which I'm happy about because I'm very excited for this film's awards potential. At least Dreamworks was able to learn from last year, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll do with the awards campaign for ST. So far all of the various trailer descriptions & promotion plans have sounded very promising. woohoo

I know they aren't always credited, but it's my understanding that Paramount is doing the testing and is involved in the marketing, I know DW is a money partner as well. And I agree, I think they are handling ST very smartly! ;)

Oh about Dreamgirls.... they showed clips at Cannes last year but I think we first saw a trailer during the Tony telecast ( which was June ) that was the first look at a trailer. Way too much too soon, imo.

Depputante - September 16, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
I understand what Johnny says about having nothing to do with the marketing.
All this thought Paramount is putting into the show now, when Johnny is done, and probably thinking about his next movie.

The fans on the other hand, will have a good and proper Johnny/Jack drought.
and then fans will be all in attendance for the :sweeneytodd . Then it's actually Johnny , in a weird round about way, controlling the marketing, eh? Is that the power it takes to win an Oscar?

Either way, I'll be in with the fans.. Bring it on!

I would think that the studios involved should do a heavy FYC marketing plan and it'll be interesting to see how many FYC events Johnny will participate in. Tim and Johnny should be front and center for at least a few industry/guild FYC Q&As and screenings.

amp - September 17, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
I am anxious to see the trailer, but on the other hand, I do prefer to see the hype kept in check. Too much too soon is never a good thing.

But just a tease? Please? :crossfingers

I'm glad that they are not going to be pushing this film months ahead of time. I hate when these movie companies start promoting these movies months before they come out and by the time the release date rolls around you are so sick of hearing about the movie and then when you go see this much hyped about movie you are really disappointed in it. I'm happy that they are taking their time with ST. Though like amp I would love to hear just a snippet of Johnny's singing. :D

I found it interesting that filming on Shantaram doesn't start until after the Golden Globes. I'm sure Johnny will do some Q&A's for Sweeney, especially since it will be hard for Tim to carry a full load. I'm hoping for a very fulfilling awards season this year.

I noticed that and I was wondering about Oscar------IF he would get nomintated, I wonder if he would be able to attend the ceremony during Shantaram filmng? Isn't Shantaram also partly funded by WBros. or is it Paramount?

Karen - September 18, 2007 12:35 AM (GMT)
Yes..it's WB.

If Johnny is nominated, I'd make book on him attending. ;) Hollywood has wanted to see him get this award. Remember 4 years ago SAG awarded him their top accolade for CJS!

Shantaram is with Warner Brothers. Since they also have a share of Sweeney Todd, I'm hoping they'll make sure that Johnny attends the Oscars WHEN he's nominated. :D

herestoyou - September 18, 2007 03:02 AM (GMT)
Thanks FAN---I thought it was WB so of course they will want to Johnny attend WHEN he's nominated next year.(thank you for correcting my IF statement-lol)

Thanks Karen---I'm looking forward to seeing him there next year! Yes, I remember the SAGS and he wasn't there to receive it-----don't do that this year Johnny! :)
